Cat growling, hissing and out of sorts

Our 4 year old cat yesterday was pacing about, wouldn't settle (normally a lazy lump who loves to curl up on the bed/sofa), and took a swipe at both my DD and me. She can be a bit scratchy at times, but I'm pretty clued up to when she doesn't want to be touched, so yesterday was out of character.

She then started prowling about the house doing that low growling thing they do and hissed at me..she's never done that before. It was like there was another cat in the house or something (we only have Rosie).

She's up now, but unlike usual she only ate a tiny bit of breakfast and has curled up on our bed and just looks really miserable Sad

She has a scratch on her nose..there is a cat that seems to be intent on coming into our garden and bullying her, but I can't see any other injuries.

Any idea's? Don't want to bundle her into her cat basket unnecessarily and take her to the vet as she hates it so much. Should I just watch and see?

She just looks sad Sad

Take her to the vet. Sounds like she's in pain.

StripySocksAndDocs · 24/02/2018 07:55

She could be hurt in some way. I've had this a few times with mine.

How late does your vet stay open today?

AnoiaUnstickMyDrawers · 24/02/2018 07:57

Sounds like she's in pain. Are you able to run your hands over her to see if you can locate the sore spot or is she too unapproachable? Either way she probably needs the vet, I just find it easier to be able to tell them where the problem is if possible.

shushpenfold · 24/02/2018 07:59

Pain definitely. My cat is only like this when ill/hurt after a fight.

MultiGrey · 24/02/2018 08:05

Vets. Sounds like the poor thing is in pain

DavetheCat2001 · 24/02/2018 08:09

Ok thanks.

She's just been up and eaten a bit more. Will try and get an appointment.

Thinking about it, OH picked her up yesterday as she was clawing the side of our sofa and she squealed.

Maybe it's her tummy..I'll phone the vet when they open at 9.

Let us know what the vet said. When my boy was like this, they saw him within hours. Turned out he had what looked to be an infected bite (which I hadn't seen) - it was full of puss.

DavetheCat2001 · 24/02/2018 11:32

I haven't been able to get an appointment today, going to take her in tomorrow although she seems a lot brighter, has eaten a bit more and asked to go outside.

Just an update..found spots of blood on cats blanket and by the litter tray, and also she was constantly licking at the base of her tail, so suspected she might have had a bladder infection.

Took her to the vet and it turns out the poor thing has an abscess at the base of her tail where she's been bitten Sad There is a nasty cat that comes into our garden specifically seeking her out at the moment to bully her.

so she's on antibiotics and pain relief.

Poor Rosie! Get better soon sweetie.

Vinorosso74 · 04/03/2018 12:38

Hope she's better soon. Do you have a water pistol to squirt the bully??

DavetheCat2001 · 04/03/2018 13:49

Thanks x

Yes I have a squirter bottle..trouble is by the time I hear something going on and get downstairs to the garden, Bully-boy has legged it!

He's been stalking poor Rosie since we first got her. She likes to sit outside our backdoor under a tarpaulin covering our BBQ, and this ruddy cat prowls down, sticks his head under the tarpaulin and has a go at her! She's had 2 big scratches on her nose already, and now this Sad

Aw bless her. I’m glad she’s feeling better. It sounds like the other cat considers your garden as it’s territory.

DavetheCat2001 · 04/03/2018 18:33

Just another question (for anyone who has had this), the vet told OH we were to keep her inside for a few days (didn't ask how long..typical dumb bloke).

She is more or less a house cat, but she does like to go out for a poo and to have a bit of a potter. She is yeowling at the back door to go out, I am resisting. Just wondered is it to help avoid further infection?

When boy cat had an abscess we had to keep him in for a few days until the wound had healed over. It was a right pain as he loves going out and only uses the litter tray grudgingly, but I didn't want to risk it getting infected.

PS Rosie is beautiful and bully cat is meanAngry
