Moving boys with cats

Hi,

We have 2 cats, one male and one female. They are both around 9/10. Our female was rescued as a kitten and has always been very temperamental. She is only truly relaxed if she’s upstairs. She will then allow us to stroke her, play with her and can be very loving. Downstairs, she’s a totally different creature; she hisses and swipes out a lot. She’s always been this way. We’ve tried Feliway diffusers but it’s made no difference. She will sit on my husband and allow him to fuss her downstairs but the children and I can’t go near her.

Our male cat moved into our shed about 3 years ago and gradually moved into our house! He’s very relaxed. He wasn’t chipped at the time. He had been neutered. He is a free spirit and likes to roam but comes home every night.

Both cats like to spend time outdoors. No litter trays in the house.

Anyway, we are moving house in a couple of weeks and I’m worried about them, particularly the female. Also, the male has been known to spray around the house at times. Is there a way of discouraging this in the new house? I’m worried the new environment will make it more likely he’ll do this (the new house has carpets everywhere!).

Sorry that was long! Basically, is there any ways to make the move smoother and less stressful for our cats?
