Can a cat not poo for 5 days?

I'm fostering two cats from a local shelter, mother and son who are both very overweight. Mother was 10 kilo, son 8.8 kilo when they was taken in by the shelter about 6 weeks ago - both have lost a kilo since then under vets supervision with special food.

They've been with me 5 days and have settled well. No issues at all with son but I can't see (or smell) any evidence mother cat has had a poo since she arrived. Certainly not in her litter tray and I've searched high and low (under beds etc) but no evidence anywhere. She has wee'd in her tray. She eats very little but moves around plenty and is showing absolutely no signs of distress.

I'm in daily contact with the shelter and they're going to get advice from the vet tomorrow (they will take her to vets absolutely any time, day or night) but I wondered if anybody has any experience of this. Is it really possible she's not had a poo for 5 days, surely she'd be obviously in pain by now?

Don't know about this. The only experience I've had its my old boy who was PTS last year. He had megacolon and sometimes struggled to go, but was in obvious distress and pain and sometimes with vomiting. We, eventually, managed to get his condition under control.

Could she have used the other cat's tray or are they kept separate? Some cats like separate trays for wee and poo.
I can't imagine that she would be looking, and acting, fit and healthy if she hadn't been for 5 days.

I find it hard to believe weeds The trays are at opposite ends of the same room. I've seen son use one of them and there's a poo, same type, same time roughly, everyday in this one. Nothing in other except wee. She eats very very little as she's not at all impressed with the change in her diet. Apparently she was being fed a lot of human food in her previous home, hence getting to ten kilo.

want2 I read about megacolon, which I know is dangerous, (must have been awful to see your cat suffering) but she is showing no symptoms. I've just checked everywhere in my home and there's NO POO Confused

Sometimes cat dont poo if in new environment but if shes eating i would think she should need to,
See what the vet says, she might need a drop of liquid paraffin, if shes constipated,

Thanks love yes, shelter will get vet's advice tomorrow. She eats very little, just licks gravy off wet food. I love fostering cats but sometimes it's worrying because you don't know their ways and they're often a bit messed up for a while.

Good luck with vets - moving is traumatic for both man and beast!

Hope she's ok OP.

My girl cat once went days without poking when she was at the vet's - she'd been bumped by a car (we think) but thankfully just bruised. They kept her in until they could be sure she was continent... and it seems she refused to poo in protest Grin After a few days she did give in and go.
