How many litter trays?

Hello everyone, I adopted two gorgeous (but extremely timid) young cats from a shelter last week. I bought one large litter tray for them to share, which has easily enough room for two cats. So far there don't appear to have been any accidents!

I just bought the one tray as that's what they had at the shelter. However, I've been reading up on litter trays since and the most prevalent advice seems to be that there should be one tray per cat (plus one extra!). I'm now thinking that they may just have had one tray at the shelter as there wasn't a lot of room in their crate.

They're two extremely nervous cats (they won't even let me stroke them yet!) so I'm reluctant to make too many changes to their living arrangements unless absolutely necessary - but obviously I'd rather give them a tray each if that's what they'd prefer.

What would you suggest?

Two cats - three litter trays. The rule of thumb for all facilities (litter, water, high sleeping spaces etc) is one per cat and a spare.

I had 2 for my two kittens but they just used the same one all the time so went back to one extra large one instead

3

My toe share a large covered box. I tried separate trays. They didn't use them.

I just have one each, my two queue up after each other to use the tray - if one sees the other going, she sits outside it till it's free and then uses it.

I've had them 10 months and they haven't had one accident yet.

Thanks everyone! It sounds like two is preferable, although there's always an exception to the rule, judging by Toddlerteaplease's post! I'm a bit nervous to change anything at all about their routine at the moment, as they're still extremely nervous and settling in. I'm worried that springing a new litter tray arrangement on them might not be a good idea! Would you try and move them onto two now, or wait till they're more settled?

I have one cat and two trays. She uses both, one for pee and one for poo!

Like Toddler, I bought another litter tray when my new kittens came to live with my and my middle aged tomcat. All three used both trays right from the start, so I now just use one big covered tray.

dementedpixie · 24/01/2018 16:48

This is the one I have

I have four cats.
I have two big covered trays with World's best litter, and a small uncovered empty tray for the one who likes to pee in it.
This works fine for us, and has done for five years.

Thanks all - sounds like some cats are genuinely ok to share trays then! My two don't seem unhappy about it at all, but I got worried after reading some people say that it's not good for the cats.

They're cats, they'll let you know if they aren't happy!

I have two cats and two trays. They use them both. One on a night the other in the day! Their choice.
