So basically my 2 year old male cat goes out all night and then is back in at about 5 in the morning, he has cat flap access to the kitchen.
Anyway for the past three months he keeps bringing dead baby rats home, last night I found half a one which at first I didn't know what it was and was about to pick up with my bare hands Envy.
How can I stop him bringing them home? I have three little children so it worries me.
Up until recently he had a collar with a bell and then lost it somehow so am I right in thinking that the bell was stopping him being able to catch rats?

Yes it'll have been the bell. You get anti hunting collars I believe!

Is it possible to stop letting him out at night?

On the other hand, the rat population might explode...

I wouldn't mind if he left them outside but he keeps leaving them in the kitchen.
He goes crazy if he's not let out at night, yowls like nobodies business.
plus I'm not keen on a litter tray in the kitchen, we don't let him in any other area at night because he scratches the furniture and if was upstairs he's constantly be waking us up, we've tried it in the past and he jumps on us or if the bedroom doors are closed scratched and meows for ages.

It's surprising too because he's only started going out for the past year, before that he was too timid and we didn't push it, he would go out to do his business and be straight back in.
He's also very dopey and I'm surprised he manages to catch anything at all, thank goodness its only baby ones and not massive ones

Yes, get a bell. And you are supposed to be grateful he's saved you a bit of his rat. Imagine, he's been catching rats and eating all of them and not getting any respect from you for it, now he leaves some of it for you to make a fuss of and you just can't be arsed, can you Grin

I'd rather have a few dead baby rats on the kitchen floor than look out the window to see the adult rats frolicking on the lawn.

justifiede · 24/01/2018 14:00

yes you're right. one time he dumped one right in front of me and looked so pleased with himself until I screamed. I think he thought I'd be happy lol.
I've never seen any rats around here to be honest but it goes to show there must be plenty of them reproducing if he catches babies all the time.

on the plus side he only ever brings them to me nobody else so he must love me the most Grin

I can't understand this at all. I love to watch rats doing stuff. I agree you don't really want them in the house, but in the garden what's the problem? I'm so pleased my cats don't bring me dead ones. I have had a rescue a couple of live ones that the cats were circling though.
