I have two beautiful, perfect little nine-week-old kittens. I am totally in love with them, their personalities are so different, they are sparky and comical and cuddly and everything you could want in a pair of kittens. I am NOT considering rehoming them, I adore them and they are already part of our family.

However I do have a problem which I am struggling with. I have a phobia of bad smells (it's not a joke!) and have been known to run out of the room in tears if someone does a really bad fart. I sit on trains gagging and breathing shallow. And the litter tray smells are KILLING me, kittens shit constantly and kitten food effing stinks. I am frequently having to run out of the room because one of them has shat (and we have a covered litter tray and Catsan litter)

I've been getting away with it because we've all had a horrific dose of flu and been off work and school, so dh has been coming to the rescue cleaning it up as soon as they do it and febrezing the room, changing the litter etc. But he's going back to work tomorrow and I will be here on my own (I work three days a week but am here until Friday now)

How am I going to cope with it without crying and vomiting and hidng in my bedroom? I am furious with myself, I had a stiff word with myself before we committed to getting them and I knew I was going to have to be brave about poo and smells. Our older cat goes outside so doesn't use a litter tray. At the moment the kittens, their litter tray/toys/food bowl/bed etc are all in the lounge and we've barricaded the door, because our older rescue cat is nervous so we are introducing them slowly in the evenings, she still has her own space in the rest of the house to eat etc without the little ones freaking her out.

Just to repeat, rehoming the kittens is NOT an option. We love them too much.

I agree going grain free. It definitely helped our kittens.

thethoughtfox · 24/01/2018 10:01

Akindofmagic, where do you get your food?

whooptifeckindo · 24/01/2018 10:02

They look gorgeous.

Greensleeves · 24/01/2018 10:06

Akindofmagic, how utterly adorable Grin

seconding World's Best clumping litter. we have 4 cats aged 1 - 11 and honestly, it's the best litter I've ever used. scoop in the morning and before bed, and it flushes so no nappy sacks etc. I mean, it's expensive but lasts ages so good value. I get ours from Amazon.

catsan reeks within hours of cleaning out a tray, even with kitten wees, in my experience.

I hope the introductions are going well. our 1 year old rescue has been with us for 6 month now, and all the cats are settled in. he's a nervous boy, but he is Brave. slow introductions at first and now they all either collapse in heaps together, or take themselves off to the top of a wardrobe...

christ. my kid is right. i AM a crazy cat lady.

exWifebeginsat40 · 24/01/2018 10:19

oh, and ours eat tesco own brand pouches and kibbles. and my ocd is set to 'germphobic' currently, and i can manage the trays ok.

Sanicat litter (or maybe other sillica litters) is way better than catsan in my opinion. My husband is also very sensitive to smells. Also the kitten poo is the worst and gets better as they get older, hang in there!

I'd swap the milk for water and see if that improves the smell !!

like other PPs I use Cats Best litter and it's fine - lasts for ages, easy to scoop out the smelly bits (I can't remember the last time I completely emptied the litter tray, I just top it up)

Greensleeves · 24/01/2018 18:50

Clumping litter sounds great, with the catsan I think we are just scooping out the poo so wee is left behind [vom]

Am thinking about the raw meat diet. Do you get the meat ready prepared from a pet shop? Or buy mince from a supermarket? It sounds expensive

Will also ditch the cat milk, I don't think they are too fussed about it anyway.

I disagree with the advice on litter. For me the only litter that doesn't smell at all is the wood pellets one. It's really worth a try. I have around 33 cats in my house right this minute, and I swear it doesn't smell.

Rudgie47 · 24/01/2018 21:14

I get the wood pellets as well and I clear all poos out straight away. What I do is scoop the poo out and put it in some newspaper then in a bag and into the outside bin.I then open the windows and spray Oust air freshener. Any poo smell goes within 5 minutes.

thethoughtfox - at first used a selection from natures menu (same as breeder) and now I use minced meat from pet's at home and my own creations. Chopped up heart/liver pilchards, raw chicken wings, and if we're having meat - I chop a bit of that up and give it to them. Both cats are thriving - the boy I think could eat anything, but the girl is sensitive and this diet suits her best.

They get wormed - they can pick up parasites from catching prey, we use good hygiene and the prepared meat is checked before it's sold.

My last cat had a mix of Royal Cain, Iams and good quality wet food, but she constantly had explosive vile smelling poo. Many vet visits, tests, new diet's didn't do anything for her. She wasn't happy about raw food, liked it sightly cooked! So with these two - we've stuck with raw (they were weaned onto it) and they look fantastic. Lots (too much energy), glossy coats and the right weight for their breed and age. And it's cheaper than Royal C and IAMS

There are Facebook groups - but some of them do above and beyond - but some of the advice is good. A year and a half in, I know what the cats like and quite happy to mix it up a bit. I don't think our girl cat would have done as well on tinned food as she appears to be sensitive to certain foods and chemical - a bit like our old girl.

Good luck

CapnHaddock · 25/01/2018 14:16

I also second the wood pellet litter - it's the only one that doesn't smell. Catsan is awful. Nature's Menu is pretty good raw food. Wet cat food absolutely stinks and kitten shit is vomtastic

madrose · 25/01/2018 14:19

Greensleves - many places now do raw cat food, if you have a freezer you can buy in bulk and it's comparable/cheaper than branded cat food.

I used to have it delivered - but now I just buy free flowing chicken or beef mince from Pets at Home - it's in the dog food section. I top it up with cheap 20% fat mince from the supermarket - even better if it's reduced. occasionally I add Ox or pig heart/ liver (about £1 from the supermarket), the odd tine of tuna or pilchards with the tomato sauce washed off. The odd raw chicken wing (messy though). at Christmas they loved the turkey neck. Or some cheap fish. If cooking meat - any type - I aways chop a bit up for them. They HATE tripe.

My two love the pet food mince frozen, if we leave it to thaw - they're not happy. They do get the odd Tin just to make sure they get Taurine. Once you get into the flow you can find bargains and it becomes quite straight forward.

JamieFraserskneewarmer · 25/01/2018 14:28

Have had cats for years and moved over to Breeder Celect Paper Cat Litter last year since it can be composted and it it is fantastic - no smell at all

whooptifeckindo · 25/01/2018 14:47

Tell me more about compostable litter. I presume you have to remove , ahem, solids. But isn't the cat pee too strong for compost?

TheSecondMrsAshwell · 26/01/2018 13:19

Ashycat used to do poos that would peel the wallpaper off the walls - the smell actually woke me up one night!

Then I switched to gluten free food (Harringtons, with the odd M&S Dried food) and while she's not pooing roses, it is at least bearable.
