Planning to get a kitten

Hi cat lovers, my family would love to have a cat. We would like a moggy and a kitten rather than an older cat. I see lots of ads on Gumtree etc, is that an acceptable way to acquire a fuzzball? Would it be worth asking a local vet if they know of kittens needing a home.
Can someone recommend a good website about cat ownership so that we can do some research.
Thanks

Our local pet food shop has a board with animals for sale, so would be worth looking in one near you. Probably be able to get some advice too. Exciting times ahead!

No, too many dodgy folk breeding cats to make a fast buck with no care for the welfare of the cats or kittens.
Rescues are the way to go, there won't be many young kittens at this time of year but we have adopted a young lad just under a year old. I also volunteer and have seen a few young cats come in recently.
Could be worth asking a vet as animals do get dumped in vet practises.

Years ago I asked a vet who advised me that she knew the local cat rescue had kittens. There were three ginger toms. One was very shy and hid away. Another was bold and came straight up, followed by the third. Their carer wanted Bold and his follower to go together so I took them both. They were lovely - one lived seven years and the other (Bold) 13. Gumtree etc not good places to find kittens - a rescue every time.

Thanks for your replies. Looks like I should make friends with my local shelter and just be patient for the right moggy to come along.

A word of warning, our local animal shelter just gave a feral kitten to my elderly parents. He was completely inappropriate for them, they have no experience training a feral cat. He's now disappeared in the house, peed everywhere and the rescue centre is stalling over taking him back. They're a bona fide charity too so be a little cautious.

Wait until spring. No kittens this time of the year.

If you are anywhere near Bradford I know a brilliant shelter
