Buying from a breeder

I’ve been thinking of buying a pedigree cat but not sure where to start. What do I need to look out for?

Why not look at a specialist pedigree rescue instead. My Persians were used as breeding queens in a kitten farm, and were in awful condition when first rescued. Sorry that's not answering your question.

Ps. Persians are obviously the best breed of cat!Grin

What breed do you want?

Basically... you don;t want a kitten farm, and decent breeders have long waiting lists so this won't be an immediate purchase.

Make sure you see the mum with the kittens, and the dad if possible.

I’ve fallen in love with Ragdolls!
I think I’ve managed to find a decent breeder locally, I’m just not sure what all the paperwork is about and don’t want to be fobbed off.
I’m assuming anyone advertising on the likes of gumtree/pets4homes isn’t a proper breeder - is that usually correct?

toddler I’m with you on the Persians. Our lovely cat died last week and he was half Persian but definitely had the Persian personality. Best cat I’ve ever had! I’ve tried offering a home but we don’t get accepted due to loud children.

Check they have been screened for heart disease. A reputable breeder should be able to produce the certificate from the cardiologist. One of mine has it and I have no doubt that she will have passed it on to her offspring.

If you have loud children then I wouldn't recommend a kitten.

Wolfiefan I have loud children and have 2 cats and 2 dogs. They’re all rescues but my cats were kittens when I got them from a local rescue and they came and did a home check first. I have 3 children, all under 6, and they were fine with this. Cats are a year old now and one sleeps on my daughters bed and the other on the twins bed. They love the kids and have never been put off my any noise
