Has anyone got any experience of this?

I have an appointment with vets tonight.

I've just taken in a cat with hair loss all over. In this case it appears to be because of over grooming, although the cause of the over grooming isn't clear. The vets also said there is sometimes a hormonal cause.

I hope the vet will be able to give you some answers.

PaperdollCartoon · 05/01/2018 17:09

It’s probably over grooming due to irritation. Both my cats are terrible for phases of it, they’ll groom until they get sore. The vet will probably give her something like antihistamine to stop her feeling itchy.

pilates · 05/01/2018 19:59

Well the vet thinks it’s over grooming but not sure why. He wanted to give her a steroid injection but because she was having her immunisation injection he didn’t want to do both so we are going back in ten days. Do you think it’s just a phase as I don’t fancy her having to have lots of steroid injections.

Harry went through a stage of over grooming and he had a bald pink belly. He never actually saw the vet as they said it was most likely due to stress and not to stress him out further. We just kept an eye on it to make sure it didn’t get sore.

We think it’s because the neighbours had scaffolding up and it was in the alley between the houses and he didn’t like it. It took a long time but it grew back again.

Here is my Yoda in his anti scratch/groom vest. It just arrived from Amazon today and he seems to be tolerating it well. I'll be interested to see if his fur manages to grow back now.

However, OP, the only bit of the cat not covered by this is the back legs, so I don't think it would help you. I also bought from Amazon a soft buster collar, that's a bit that a small, blow up rubber ring for swimming, and something like that would help.

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 06/01/2018 17:53

Oh he’s lovely TCN! I think I would have lost limbs if I’d tried to get Harry into that!

pilates · 06/01/2018 19:25

I find it upsetting the thought she may be doing it because she is stressed ☹️. We couldn’t love her anymore than we do, she is hardly left on her own. She is fed good food and lots of love (when she is in the mood for it). The only thing we don’t allow is to let her out at night.

My cat was constantly licking and had massive bald patches. He had blood tests and is allergic to so many different types of plants, grass, pollen etc etc. He had to have specific anti allergy stuff (technical!) made up for him and has 2 immunotherapy injections every 3.5 weeks. He still has bald bits and some months are better than others which is down to seasonal plants etc. At the moment he has 2 bald bits on his back, not much fur on his hind legs and a rather skinny tail. None of the bald patches are sore though so he doesn't groom it too much luckily.

pilates · 06/01/2018 20:39

My DH wondered if she is allergic to something in the garden. Do you know what sort of plants he is allergic to catsarenice?

catsarenice · 06/01/2018 20:56

I've got a massive list somewhere but can't remember where I put it! Definitely grass and fir trees (no more real Christmas trees!). The list was huge - it was so many things that they had to make up two injections as couldn't do it all in one. At first they wanted us to keep him as an indoor cat but he'd had 9 years of going outside and I couldn't do that to him. He's happy enough - just rather bald bless him! I'll see if I can find the list.

Wolfiefan · 06/01/2018 20:57

Ours would over groom due to a flea allergy (if I was late in treating!) Are you up to date with effective flea treatment?

catsarenice · 06/01/2018 21:01

Found it in the cupboard of doom!!! The vet very helpfully wrote it out for me with the months of the year the plants are about. Unfortunately he's affected by something every month.

Yes up to date with flea injections, worming tablets and immunisation.

Wow that is a long list catsarenice ☹️

I have a patchy cat too. Our vet has said that it's over grooming due to stress maybe becaus our other cat can be a bit of a cow, although she doesn't seem stressed at all. We've tried feliway, no difference.

Wolfiefan · 06/01/2018 21:15

Injections for fleas? Are you in the UK?

pilates · 06/01/2018 21:20

Yes Wolfie, it’s called Program and lasts for six months

OP posts:
Wolfiefan · 06/01/2018 21:25

That's one I haven't heard of. Six months protection sounds good.
Any chance she's reacting to something sprayed on grass or fields? Or washing powder? Where does she sleep?

pilates · 06/01/2018 22:14

On my bed

My cat has flea allergy dermatitis and pulls hair from his legs and base of tail. He has steroid injections and anti inflammatory tablets if it gets bad. He has v regular flea treatment but my vet says a flea would only have to look at him for him to react. So might be this even if flea treatment up to date.
