Advice needed-regular 'visitor' has destroyed my cat's confidence!

Hi all. Here's the backstory: We got the keys to our house 3 weeks before moving in. During the 3 weeks I visited regularly to speak to tradespeople working there and noticed a cat who lives nearby was obviously very used to coming into the house. The previous family also had a cat aswell as a dog. This visitor was most put out that I wouldn't let him in/engage with him but I had to stop myself because of moving in with our own cat. Anyway, after moving in the cat came regularly, howling at the back door and scratching at the doors and windows which really upset our boy. Once the time came for him to be allowed out, a number of battles ensued and it then seemed that they had come to their own arrangements about who was out and about in their shared territory at which time (our boy likes to be out and about first thing in the morning). All was quiet for around 18 months with no visits from the other cat. Then around 3 weeks ago, he reappears and the whole thing starts again, scratching at the doors and windows and appearing every time our boy wants to go out (cue shrieking and howling and a few chases and nasty fights) Ours is now frightened to go out and has had a couple of pooing accidents during the night, probably when the other one's scratching at the window. HELP!! this us really affecting him and he's so miserable and frightened Hmm

Do you think it's maybe the previous owner's cat making it's way back "home"? Could explain the absence of your visitor if he'd been rounded up and taken back to New house and has now wandered off again.
Do you have contact details for them?

Hi weeds, thanks for reading and replying. No it's definitely not the previous owners cat as we saw their cat on the house viewings and he was ginger and white and this one's a grey tabby...sensible of you to consider this though as they did only move a mile or so away. Also, I'm almost certain I've seen 'the visitor' sitting in a window of a house round the corner

Water pistol for visitor when he shows up making a nuisance of himself?

Bluesheep8 · 30/12/2017 12:37

Great idea weeds, thank you - we had flung a jug of water at the pair of them during one shrieking stand-off so of course our boy got soaked too (plus it meant me racing out in my dressing gown and wellies and DH slipping on the ice) I'm liking the idea of being able to target from the doorway. Thanks again for your advice Smile

Pic of him during happier times, let's hope peace is restored for him via the water pistol method!

Awww he's a sweetie Grin

Yes he is,thanks weeds. he is honestly the kindest, gentlest boy you could ever meet and is the least likely 'fighter' there is. Maybe the problem is that he LOOKS like a big bruiser who might fancy a scrap but instead he's very timid.
