How much does your cat eat daily?

Hi All

My cat is a proper greedy bugger, even as a kitten he’d stalk the other cats bowl ready to pounce on anything left

He may be a little fatter than he should be but if he’s hungry he gets quite vocal and quite bitey

So just curious what the norm is for everyone else?

Do you also keep food available all the time or only feed at meal times?

My cat is big and vet has advised me he needs to lose weight. He’s 5.75kg ginger puss. I honestly don’t feel like I feed him too much, but Have since started monitoring his food portions to no avail and I’m left wondering if some cats may just be prone to chubbiness.

He gets

1 small tin of cat food 85g, and measured portion of cat biscuits. A few dreamies as a treat 5/6 and not every day.

Comparing to some on here and corresponding size of cat, it doesn’t seem like a lot ?

Dry indoor cat food all times, probably eats about 40-50g a day. 10 Dreamies most days. Water.
A couple of pouches a week and a tin of tuna every so often when the biggest soft touch in the world my dad comes round.
She's about 3.5kg and is about six years old. I've had her five. Rescue cat, terrified of the outside world, cocky as feck indoors though

At the moment one tub of wet food (she likes terrine) and as many biccies as she wants. A few dreamies. it means the poos are easier to handle until we're sorted

I don't think she appreciates she's dining off antique china and drinking water from my lovely dinnerware set! Aesthetic little swine!! (I can't find her usual cat bowls at present.)

As much Purina One as she wants to eat (quite a lot usually) and as many mice and rabbits as she feels like catching. She’s 6, small and a perfect weight - we were at the vet last week for injections and the vet said she would have guessed her as half her age and that she seemed like a young cat.

I also asked the vet about Purina One as it is often criticised on MN and cat will eat nothing else and vet said it was a good complete food and better then some premium foods.

One is ex feral so not really sure, she kills & eats at speed and only brings bigger stuff home to eat unless it's a gift. Presumably a lot, typical day might be something like a rabbit or a magpie for breakfast, and maybe 7/8 mice in the evening and anything left from breakfast. Odd occasion she eats cat food she can get through a can for breakfast before hunting properly at night. Only treat she'll touch is our meat/ fish depending on type/ cooking method.

Other eats maybe a pouch a day and a bowl of dry a week. Also eats treats/ pasta/ chicken/ you name it. In pretty large quantities.

Both are very lean, feral average size, other petite. Both super active.

We were recommended Purina One by our vet!

Finderscrispy, that definitely doesn't sound like a lot - ours is 4.3 kilos and has maintained that weight for about three years now on dry food, two to three pouches of wet per day and the odd half dozen Dreamies/handful of meat trimmings, etc.

beware I know. I have had other cats and I have never had this problem before. To look at him you’d think I was feeding him mars bars.

He is was formerly stray and he’s generally a friendly soul, so I’m left wondering if someone else is feeding him, not sure why on Earth someone would do that given that he doesn’t exactly looked famished, but I guess there’s some strange folk out there.

Ooh, he might be a Six Dinner Sid! We had one who used to break into our old house and eat our cat's food until we finally thwarted him with a microchip cat flap. He was of Maine Coon proportions but surprisingly stealthy. Once I got on the local Facebook group, it turned out he was doing the same thing along about four streets, and his owner was mortified

My cat is on a prescription diet of dry food for urinary stress. She has 40g in the morning and 40g in the evening.

She's put 1kg on since starting it so I've had to change to the diet version, but she's still a little plump 😆

She also drinks a lot of water every day, but seems quite happy on this food. I know she'd eat more if I put it down, but the vet said 80g so that's what she's getting.

Our last cat brought back the occasional field mouse, but a rabbit is another matter.

Our current cat (not yet allowed out) isn't much bigger than a rabbit herself. Although a lot feistier.

80g of Arden Grange dry food in two sittings. Plus a Lik-e-liks ( used to be a few Dreamies or a cat salami, the ruination caused by the chicken flavour sludge is a WHOLE other story).
Plus whatever he slaughters.
Just shy of 7 Kg. Not fat, just huge.

Mine is about 5kg and has 2 pouches a day. He is always trying to steal food so I've wondered if it isn't enough, but he's not skinny so think it's probably just his character.

This has been a fascinating read thank you everyone! Sounds like my fatty doesn’t eat a huge amount more that some others but definitely some food for thought there! 😃

beware that’s funny.

He’s a cheeky thing so wouldn’t rule out your example, but he’s such a fusspot over food brands, won’t touch whiskas and such like. Can’t imagine how he’s found someone (place) to cater to his food demands. so although a possibility, it just seems unlikely.

I’m sure the vet thinks I’m telling fibs when I explain what I’m feeding him - He’s got bit of arthritis from being in car accident before I got him, so really could do with losing weight to take pressure of his joints. So he really does need to lose a bit of weight.

I do t think two pouches a day for a great big cat is a lot does he have dry on top? I suppose if he’s not complaining. I’m probably over feeding mine.

thesecond my rabbit eater is average size, but has brought home big rabbits/ birds. Occasionally they are too big to get under the gate and too heavy for under the fence and she comes for assistance. She also has huge country rats but they aren't her first choice to eat, and she hunts to eat, not like a pet for fun iyswim. It's because she was a rural feral imo, I've known plenty of very brave, proficient hunters and farm cats but never anything that hunts like she does.

I think it's like kids: fussy at home but totally different at nursery . Ours is a fussy git and has carefully trained us to only buy one particular type of Felix. But we caught her eating kolbasa sausage or something similar when she went whining to our neighbours about how underfed she was...

Fluffy slim cat. Brings in blackbirds, rabbits, mice, robins and once a beautiful greenfinch 😢. Doesn’t eat them and they’re usually unharmed.

6kg boy cat, 4.5 pouches of gourmet a day plus a bit of whatever meat Dh had that night.

Which is why he now eats with a cat perched on the table in front of him.

He’s 6.8 kg of pure hanger if he doesn’t get enough food.

@Weezol Colin is much more badass than his name would suggest. He’s currently sporting a hole in his face from some vicious fight he prob instigated. Here he is looking like butter wouldn’t melt

They each get 20g of urinary stress for breakfast and 1 pouch for tea. They are both perfect weight. I am a pet food nazi all my pets have their food carefully measured every day.

5 cats ranging from 18 months to 20yrs and varying sizes 4kgs to 7kgs.
One tin every morning and one tin every evening between them. Royal Canin biscuits on offer all day and night.
One cat adds an extra mouse or bird in per day to his diet.
The old boy gets a bit of tuna with his meds in.
