Cat drinking a lot of water

DavetheCat2001 · 14/12/2017 17:11

Our cat has suddenly started drinking a lot of water in the last few days, not only from her bowl but also from the base of our Christmas tree!

I have made an appointment with the vet for early next week, but just wondered if anyone could advise if this is always a bad sign of kidney problems etc?

She's only about 4 years old (unsure exactly as RSPCA/vet we got her from seemed to say different things), but she looks very healthy, is eating and has a glossy coat/bright eyes etc.

Pic of her just now attached..we've only had her 3 months and I am trying not to worry Sad

Excessive drinking can be a sign of diabetes but she seems young to be diabetic. I think a vet trip is a sensible move then they can check her out.
I remember you getting her, she is lovely.

Tinselistacky · 14/12/2017 17:31

Our ddogs we drinking bowl fulls lately as the central heating is on more and more. Maybe your cat isn't used to indoor heating?

Fekko · 14/12/2017 17:32

Or maybe if you've put your hearing on she's just getting a bit more hot?

cherrycola2004 · 14/12/2017 17:37

Diabetes/Kidney or Hyperthyroidism but at 4 I'd say too young. Does she go out? Is she weeing any more?

cherrycola2004 · 14/12/2017 17:38

Also she is gorgeous try not to worry one of mine had a UTI was drinking more course of ABs and right as rain. Is she eating more than usual?

DavetheCat2001 · 14/12/2017 17:43

Thanks guys.

She doesn't seem to be peeing more than usual. She goes out on and off, but likes to be inside more often than not..more of a house cat!

Central heating has been on lots so maybe that's it.

Thanks..just love her so much, hate to think anything could be wrong with her.

Fingers crossed please let us know

DavetheCat2001 · 15/12/2017 09:36

I will, thank you cherry

I've managed to get an appointment for Sunday afternoon so fingers x'd.

She seems pretty perky this morning...ripping up my carpets, the little git!

Oh dear Grin she def sounds fine in herself

mrsrhodgilbert · 15/12/2017 21:54

Our cat has been doing this recently. She is 13 and the vet took a blood sample on Tuesday to check for kidney trouble or diabetes but she is fine. Nothing was found and no explanation given. Just to keep an eye on her.

cherrycola2004 · 20/12/2017 13:23

How did she get on @DavetheCat2001 (I also have a cat called Dave)

DavetheCat2001 · 20/12/2017 14:58

Thanks for asking cherry, OH took her in on Sunday and on initial examination couldn't find anything wrong with her.

They gave us some crystal things so we can try and get a urine sample though (looking forward to that!), to see if there is anything wrong with her waterworks.

The vet did say on a separate note however that she has Gingivitis and needs a tooth removing, so going to have to book her in for that in the new year. I had noticed that her breath is exceptionally smelly.

Oh that's good news and she will feel much better after a dental. My girl recently had 9 out!!! She's like a new cat.

Weedsnseeds1 · 20/12/2017 22:56

If she's in a bit more than usual due to the weather it could be she's missing her normal opportunity to scavenge tasty, scummy plant pot water and the like.
You have consulted the vet early, so hopefully, even if it is more than than that, you will be able to treat sooner rather than later. Hopefully it's something and nothing though.

DavetheCat2001 · 21/12/2017 13:27

She seems really fed up today Sad

Wondering if her teeth/gums are troubling her. I have made an appointment to have them done on Jan 3rd (first available), and nearly had a heart attack when they sent me an estimate of the cost at £500!!!

I'm a bit pissed off with the vets to be honest as when we rehomed her (only 3 months ago) we were told that she had, had a full MOT/wormed/flea treated/chipped/vaccinated etc (which we paid £65 towards), so to now be told that she has rotten teeth and gingivitis which is going to cost us £££ to fix, is a bit galling.

I don't believe for a second that her dental conditions have only appeared in the last 3 months. Apparently there are lesions on her gums and they are in a bad state. I think the vet should help us with the cost of the treatment, and I have emailed them this morning to say so.

Insurers have also told me that they cannot guarantee they will pay up for the whole/part of the treatment either..only that we should put in a claim and hope for the best!

My priority is obviously getting Rosie fit and well again, but we honestly can't afford £500 at the moment Sad

Can you go to another vet?
I've found the prices vary so much!

I paid shit loads for my cat and she had lots of extra meds as was 9 teeth so brutal and was £400 ish can't remember exactly

That estimate sounds bullshit. Have they given you an itemised estimate...? Are they telling you she needs fluids to support during the operation because of so at that age then refuse it. That's £100 saved. Also if they want pre op bloods also refuse them! Another £80 saved.

Vets see us coming

DavetheCat2001 · 21/12/2017 14:24

Yes I have an itemised list, will try and post it in a minute.

We are in London, not sure if that makes a difference to cost? I'm more annoyed that they were meant to have given her a proper check over before we adopted her. I'm pushing for them to foot some of the bill at least.
