Sore mouth and won't eat - very worried

Arthur-moggy is not well. Since Saturday evening he's been running away from his food which has lead me to think that he was in pain and somehow relating eating to pain. Eating is his best thing ever so it's a big sign it's serious.
I took him to the vet last night who gave him an analgesic and a shot of Loxicam, but he's no better today and has managed a couple of mouthfuls of food at best.
He's approx 17 (not entirely sure as we got him from a rescue 4 years ago) and one of his kidneys is not functioning brilliantly.
The vet has just said to go back in a few days if he's still not eating but I'm worried sick as they can go downhill so fast.
Has anyone had any experience of this? Is there anything I can do to help him eat? We have two other cats so I can't leave food for him to come back to as they scoff it in seconds.

NB: the vet said that he looked grumpy. I had to explain that he has Resting Grump Face by default.

I honestly can't thank you all enough. Arthur is cuddled up to me on the bed purring; I've given him another yoghurty thing and he's getting back to his old self. The real test will be breakfast tomorrow so everything crossed!

Breakfast was interesting; he bombed out of the cat flap whilst DH was getting the food out, but I managed to coax him back in with a plate of mashed up food which he wolfed down.
I'm hoping that if I can keep him fed like this then he'll stop associating pain and food time. He must be feeling better as he just wouldn't have managed the food two days ago Smile

Sounds positive. You must be relieved.

Our gorgeous Precious had the same issues - please take Arthur back to the vet ASAP.

Precious was only 12 and we were first fobbed off with dental issues as most of her teeth had already been removed before we rescued her. After a second vet checked her we were given the same diagnosis as TimTam I also hope it's nothing as serious and wish you luck x

As for wolfing the mashed food down, yes they do this until pain gets worse. It really is worth getting Arthur checked if only to find out why he is acting this way.

He's really good. He had another blood test that showed one kidney still wasn't quite right but definitely not failing.
His mouth is still slightly inflamed but nothing like it was. The vet said he might have eaten an insect that bit back but she can't be certain.
I'm keeping him on a small dose of Loxicom but he's eating ok and had a few biscuits along with his pouch tonight. He looks to meow another day but I'll be keeping a very close eye on him. Smile

I'd second lik-e-liks but they are highly addictive, so you run the risk of endless whinging for them.
I hope the second opinion at the vets helps
