Litter trays for a beginner

So we've brought home our rather gorgeous rescue cat, Eddie. He's got a litter tray with wood chip litter, as that's what his foster parents used.
So how do I know when he's been? Am I correct in thinking it turns to sawdust?
I scoop once a day - do I have to bag & throw or can I flush down the loo?
Then clean the tray completely once a week?

Does that sound about right??

Never owned a cat before so thank you in advance!

First lesson to learn - you don't own Eddie, dear. Oh no, you are his slave and he will call the shots from now on. Your life as an independent human being is now over and Eddie will control your thoughts, (which will mostly be of him, anyway), your actions and your life, in general. Welcome to cat slavery Flowers

Love his name and hope you have many catty years together.

I seem to use litter trays differently to most people, so I'm not familiar with using the woodchip litter. Someone will be along soon to offer advice. If you'd like to share a pic of Eddie, that'd be a very nice thing.

scoop poo as soon as you notice it's there. Don't think that litter is flushable so I put in a poo bag and bin it. I use clumping litter so can scoop out pee as well. Once a day may not be enough as cats don't like dirty litter.

dementedpixie · 26/11/2017 22:41

What litter is it? Do you mean pellets?

mineofuselessinformation · 26/11/2017 23:04

Wood pellets - scoop and flush poo, bin the whole lot when wee gets too much.
When old MOG was using it (we've graduated to a Catsan type litter now, better for his arthritic feet), it used to be when it got a bit pongy - although he's always had two trays.

cherrycola2004 · 27/11/2017 00:05

Yep scoop the poop and wee if you can the wood breaks down and once a week full clean is ideal. I personally hate the wood litter in time you can try to swap if you want. The plant fibre litters clump so can remove the whole wee. It's dearer but lasts longer so works out the same. Cats best or worlds best.

Congrats on Eddie, fab name Smile

TheHodgeHeg · 27/11/2017 03:22

You'll see if he's used it cause there will be a big mound of litter in the tray and (if he's feeling particularly active) all over the floor in front of it.

playftseforme · 27/11/2017 03:44

We've had our rescue kitten for a week now and he's used to the wood pellet stuff. Once he settles in a bit more, I'm going to gradually move him over to the clay clumping variety that we use with our older cat. It's much easier to remove the wees!

Broken11Girl · 27/11/2017 03:46

Want is right. You do not own a cat Grin
But yes that sounds fine. I scoop poop when it appears so once a day ish - leave it to dry a bit so I don't get any skid marks on the scoop Envy why do we do this, didn't expect to discuss bodily waste until I have DC Confused and full change and clean when it smells once a week ish. On which Madam BrokenCat inevitably waits until I sit down with a Brew or Wine and ruins the immaculately clean tray with a particularly huge and stinky poop, making me go out to the bins in the cold. Cats are dicks. But fabulous. Enjoy. And yes pic please. Smile

Wantobeme was being polite. Photos are obligatory.

Eddie is gorgeous. I love his white mittens :). How old is he?

BulletFox · 28/11/2017 20:39

Eddie is gorgeous:)

shivs1974 · 28/11/2017 23:23

Ah thank you. Not quite of age...they think 8-11 but possibly older. He spends all day asleep!!

I use a clumping litter which I love
Basically I "muck out" like a horses stable Grin so remove poo and clumps of wee and top up with some fresh. It never smells, and then every so often I empty all the litter into a spare tray and wash the main tray. So I never ditch all the litter as it stays fresh
