Cat water fountains?

Can you tell me your experience of cat water fountains? Mine won’t drink from a bowl at all, only a tap, a pint glass or the toilet 🤮

I’m worried they don’t get enough water now they are staying in more- can you recommend any at all please?

My cat used to very begrudgingly drink from a bowl (she prefered the kitchen tap) so I bought one of these www.catit.com/uk/shop/flower-fountain/ Considering my cat is scared of pretty much everything, I was surprised how much she loved it and how easily she took to it. Now I don't even bother with a bowl because it soon got ignored in favour of the fountain.

She seems to like having the falling water to drink from so I have it on what they call the "calm streams" setting (the one with the full flower on top). She uses it every day and it's really quiet. I have it right outside my bedroom door and hear the water trickling a little bit if I'm listening for it, but no motor noises unless I'm walking right by it.

I looked at a few fountains, and one of the reasons I chose this one was because you can buy replacement motors, and you can take the motor apart to clean it. Two things I considered fairly key in a hard water area. The filters are also fairly cheap and come in a pack of three, which lasts roughly 9 weeks.

Mine hates her normal bowl so she has a simple dispenser (think low tech plastic bottle of water suspended above a little water slide - it's a bit like a water cooler except zero mechanical parts are involved). I put it next to her litter tray which seems to satisfy her weird urges even though I personally think that's disgusting. My tom gets his water bowl in a more sensible part of the house as he's more conventional.

Still doesn't stop her crawling around the shower tray trying to lap up warm water after we've washed (blech).

Thanks for the feedback- I've seen the flower one and diddnt know you could take it apart- we are in a hard water area.

Ours enjoy a nice drink of post shower water as well the disgusting little urchins.

My cat has a love hate relationship with them. She refuses to drink out of a ‘normal’ cat bowl or too close to her food. Bought a catmate fountain which she loved for the first two weeks then went off of it. It took up a lot of space and required expensive filters too!
In the end we put a small plastic IKEA pot in the kitchen window and fill it each day and she loves that the most because it’s high and away from food/litter.
Fickle creatures!

It was a fad with ours. I binned it in the end.

I mix boiling water into his food to get extra fluids into him.

Our cats would only drink out of running bath tap or (my) glass of water. Bought them a fountain bowl and they laughed at it. Dropped all their toys in it but never drank out it. Now I leave a glass out for them and leave them to it.

Give our cat a nice bowl of clean water and she will ignore it but head for the mucky ex washing up bowl with rainwater, leaves and crud in it that's been left in the garden.
How 'hygienic' is freshly caught (and eaten) mouse or rabbit?

Valerrie · 24/11/2017 18:56

Mine liked it at first but now refuse to drink from it. They'll only drink from the bath taps Hmm

AccidentallyRunToWindsor · 25/11/2017 06:42

Those of you whose mogs drink from the taps, how often do you turn the taps on for them? I'm worried mine aren't getting enough water..

Mine loves her fountain. Or the rainwater barrel!

Triangul8ed · 25/11/2017 07:24

We have this one www.petsathome.com/shop/en/pets/pet-fountain. The cat seems to like it and drinks lots.

Botanicbaby · 25/11/2017 09:10

Perhaps a vet on here can clarify but I thought that cats didn't need that much water anyway? (Though of course should always have access to it).

They hate water bowls being placed next to their food. This is an instinctive evolutionary trait as they used to hunt their prey in the wild and eat it where it couldn't contaminate their water supply.

Mine now happily (occasionally) sips from her Catmate fountain which she prefers if she's been given dry food. I find it easy to clean and not noisy at all. I use still mineral water which keeps filters clear.

She also has a water bowl placed elsewhere but still drinks from pots and planters outside. I think they dislike chlorinated tap water and murky rainwater tastes better! Smile

TroysMammy · 25/11/2017 09:13

My cat refused the water fountain but happily drunk out of a rectangle, plastic takeaway type container.

Oldraver · 25/11/2017 14:30

We've got the flower one and Ernie loves it.

We had it about a year when it stopped working so looked into a new motor, then saw we were supposed to clean the pump out periodically. There was a bit of gunge in there and it has worked fine since

Ernie also thinks the outside water feature is his...he will perch on the stone and drink the water from it

LostPlatypus · 25/11/2017 14:47

Aww OP I love that yours like the post shower water! Mine is banned from the bathroom, mostly because she likes to sing in the bath, which I'm not sure my neighbours would appreciate esp at 4am.

I should probably add that mine is an indoor only cat (she's a nervy rescue cat so occasionally suns herself on my doorstep but that's it). She's also mostly on dry food as recommended by the vet for her teeth, so needs access to water more than a cat on a mostly wet diet. As long as the water isn't right next to their food, in general cats are pretty good at getting water when they need it even if it isn't their preferred tap/whatever. So if there's a bowl out they will use it. There's always some cats that won't though cos well cats!
