Stray kittens and a runt!

4 weeks ago a stray cat had 4 kittens in our woodshed. We've been feeding them and providing a few comfort bits. They all seem to be doing well.

However, there's one that's smaller. Her eyes always look half closed. She won't approach the food while the others are eating so we have started feeding her separately.

Obviously we are taking the Mummy to the vets in a week to be done.

What else do you think we need to do to keep them safe?

Is mum cat friendly?

To keep them safe you really need to bring them inside. Kittens get eaten by foxes all the time. Also the kittens will need a lot of handling to make the them and this is the crucial time to do it.

As for the little one it's hard to know, but separate feeding sounds like a good idea. I would see how it goes and maybe take to the vet if you are worried. You could take it with Mumcat when she goes in and the vets could have a quick look at the same time.

It's great that you're taking care of them.

Thank you so much for the advice. Managed to get the teeny one eating a decent amount today.
Unfortunately we've just rescued a GSD x husky so I'm not sure they'd be safe in the house either. Hopefully my boyfriend will agree to a heater and cat flap in the conservatory!

Take the little one into the vet. There could be something going on that is stopping him eat. Maybe he is in pain or something.

Well at the moment you don't need either a heater or a cat flap in the conservatory. Just bring them all in and keep them inside the conservatory and give them a box with a fleece and that will be fine. It can't be colder than the woodshed.

You could always buy a heat pad for the box/bed.

It's best really if mumcat doesn't have the opportunity to go outside in case she decides to move the kittens somewhere. Also of course once she's had the op she will need to stay inside for two or three days.

We live in a very old house so the woodshed is actually warmer than the conservatory (otherwise I probably would have already moved them!).

They already have insulating foil and a heat pad. Plus the wood makes it far warmer than our leaky old conservatory.

I see. They would still be much safer in the conservatory. And with a heat pad there will be no problem. Are you handling the kittens?

Ahem.

Where are the kitten Photos?

[stern look]

Oh yes, good point soup!
