Rescue cat acclimatisation

Asking for a friend, but I'll probably need to know for when I feel up to getting someone to take Nobby's place.

He's taken a five year old unwanted pet through a friend of a friend. The cat is used to going out, so should be safe on the roads, but my friend is afraid he'll get confused and lost. The poor cat is desperate to go out. Luckily he's litter trained but he's not happy.

Is it safe to let him out or should it be gradual with supervision? How do you supervise a cat Grin? My friend has a garden and someone in the family is usually around for a couple of hours in the day.

Thanks for any tips

He should probably keep the cat in for at least two weeks.

Then the first time the cat goes out, don't feed it before it goes, let it out first thing in the morning and then it will come home for food.

It depends on where he lives in relation to where the cat used to live too, they can travel a fair distance. One cat we got from CPL managed to find it's old home over 3 miles away and it had never been in our neighbourhood before.

He should keep it in for at least three weeks. Then let out when hungry in the morning.

It's always best to keep cats in at night.

Thanks very much pirate and neuterer. I'll pass it on at work tomorrow.

Put the used litter tray outside in the garden when the cat is outside so can smell the way back

I know not such a great idea with Winter but first time letting out I'd keep the door open. I didn't leave it as long as 2 or 3 weeks, I think it was a couple of days, I watch at the door and after he'd had a good sniff he came back in.

Thanks. I'll tell him
