Elderly cat

I'm starting to get worried about this.

I've had my cat for 9 years, she didn't actually like me for a few years until my exH became violent then she would sleep in my hair.

It was a bit irritatating at first suddenly having a previously hostile cat getting tangled in your hair, I would wake up and think 'ugh no cat, wtf are you doing in my hair'. I think it was actually to protect me, it certainly halted him in his tracks and stopped him doing it again. So I left him and took the cat.

Things are very different now, I'm penniless, need to find a rental, turned down an ideal place because they allowed gerbils and goldfish only, and have to travel 2 hours tomorrow to view a place which will let me take her.

She won't tolerate kids or other cats. She's really quite sweet.

Another thread here got me thinking about insurance. Don't have this at present, any recommendations?

When the agents said they had somewhere which would accept her I said 'yeah yeah yeah yeah' and they said 'no, you have to see the place first before you accept'

So I don't even know if it has a garden.

So this is basically asking:

A) advice on pet insurance?
B) advice on potentially retraining a cat which is used to having outside access to being indoors?

Insurance cheap isn't always best make sure to go for a policy with life time cover for any illnesses. My cat was an outdoor cat but had to keep her indoors first two weeks while she acclimatised to her new home. I just let her out her carrier in a room with the litter tray in front of her and she knew to use it

Mulch · 15/11/2017 17:26

Congratulations on your new place, glad you both got to go together :)

BulletFox · 15/11/2017 17:35

Thanks Mulch, I really hope things turn around soon and I get back to full time work to support us both. I mean I can just about manage if she doesn't get ill. There was a previous post about vet bills which got me thinking.

Life time cover...I'll phone around a few providers to see what they offer.

Hope your kitty is doing well :)

I'm not sure you can get insurance for a cat if that age?

BulletFox · 15/11/2017 17:42

She's 13...oh god really? I'll phone a few places tomorrow.

It wouldn't matter if I'm back to work soon but I suddenly fretted from a previous thread about vet bills what would happen if she got ill

Can you not use PDSA if you're not working and she gets ill?

Wolfiefan · 15/11/2017 18:41

I think you will struggle to get insurance at that age. Can you put money aside?
Yes to PDSA.
If she's older she may be ok indoors anyway. If not then offer climbing opportunities and enrichment indoors.
Good luck op and I hope you find work soon.

BulletFox · 15/11/2017 18:55

PDSA...ok, thanks

I’ve got life cover for my girls. Good job as they’ve cost 10k this year and going to have to claim again.

BulletFox · 15/11/2017 19:28

How old are your girls, Toddler?

With the PDSA it can be hard to register over the phone here so if its like that near you I'd go down to the place.
I'm with Argos for my cat hes 5 and its £9 something a month. They have a good reputation for paying out as do Pet Plan but they can be very expensive.

poisonedbypen · 15/11/2017 21:29

A quick bit of googling suggests that you can get insurance for elderly cats but it costs a lot so you might be better putting something aside each month. We have lifetime insurance taken out when Dcat was a kitten. We can't change now as he has a long term condition which a new policy wouldn't cover, and the price has crept up over the years but there is nothing we can do about it. That's another point - any policy won't cover pre existing conditions (or vaccinations etc).

Vinorosso74 · 15/11/2017 21:42

I don't think you can take out lifetime cover at 13 but you can insure them.
