Cat flaps - microchip or collar activated? Do they work?

Just this really need to put a cat flap in, we live in quite a cat heavy area and i don't want next doors' pair making themselves at home, so want it to be our cat only.

Do they work? Are they easy to fit (will get a tradesperson in )

Thanks in advance.

Thanks so much for all your replies! Do you use batteries or is it wired in?

OP
We have a SureFlap and it takes batteries.

We had the same problem and contacted SureFlap who sent us an extra part to attach and reinforce it against escape artists! It was a bit fiddly to fit but has worked really well.

We've just bought a Sureflap pet door with a hub so we can control it using an app. Apparently I'll also get updates when Harry goes in and out!

Thanks AnotherEmma, I’ll get in contact with them.

We have a sureflap cat feeder to stop our piggy cat eating our skinny cats food. It took some training, but it now works really well.

Our cats are microchipped in their necks. The microchip catflap works great. It is also sureflap.

We've got the sureflap with hub. Bit more expensive but worth it. It can be locked by using the app when you're not at home! We get notifications of both our furries coming and going.

We haven't had a cat for a while, but we still have a magnetic cat flap in our backdoor. Oldcat was a ditherer. He'd sit on the back step pondering about whether to venture afield, close enough to trigger the magnetic lock - click clack, click clack, click clack ad nauseum. We ended up having to set it to constantly open because he kept flattening the batteries & getting locked out.

Works perfectly here too. Sureflap customer service also great. Mind you our cats still sit outside looking baffled half the time but they are v manipulative.

We had a Sureflap built into our new extension wall. It worked brilliantly for about 9 years. It took the cats a few days to get used to walking through a wall but it was worth it. We are forever having to intervene in monstrous cat battles in the early hours, or just trying to remove 'visitors'. We found it particularly useful when we had to keep unwell cats indoors/keep them outside away from workmen (though this did get met with furious wailing).

Annoyingly, the electrics now seem to be faulty (Sureflap were very helpful in past with spares - they might even have sent us a bit for free), but now we are stuck with a discontinued model that will be an absolute pig to remove without damaging the external render.

It still works as a cat flap, but Madcat much prefers bawling to be let in through the kitchen door.

@Wax.....Thanks, it's the back door and I'm assuming metal (steel) on a wooden frame. I've spoken to my neighbour who put a standard cat flap in (but is now considering changing to microchip)...he didnt know the doors were steel until he started drilling...he got through four drill bits Grin
