Baldness under collars

I've just been fussing one of my cats and I've noticed she is bald under her collar,
It wasn't too tight (do the 2 fingers test every few days) but she is totally bald where it's been.
I feel terrible, shall I leave the collar off and let it grow back it just put it back on and leave it?

I don't have collars on mine

AccidentalyRunToWindsor · 14/10/2017 11:34

I know lots of people don't put them on their cats but I worry about them getting lost or run over and no one telling me though. They are all chipped but if the average person found a cat they might not take them to get their chip scanned.

My Persians ended up with huge knots under their collars. So gave up on them. Especially when I cut Maia’s neck trying to get the knot off!

AccidentalyRunToWindsor · 14/10/2017 11:46

@Toddlerteaplease I bet that went down well!!

I've checked the other 2 and they seem fine, I feel ever so guilty I've not noticed before now. She doesn't seem in pain and its not sore - just bald!

Is it a flea collar? Could be allergic to the pesticide if it is?

AccidentalyRunToWindsor · 14/10/2017 13:23

No @Weedsnseeds1 it's just a standard one.

Harry doesn't wear a collar any more but is completely bald where it was. It wasn't a flea collar, wasn't too tight and he wasn't bothered by it. He hasn't worn it for over 18 months and the fur hasn't grown back.

Wolfiefan · 14/10/2017 16:32

Collar injuries are horrific. Take the collar off. If someone found a cat they wouldn't scan it themselves. They would take it to a vet or rescue.

AccidentalyRunToWindsor · 14/10/2017 16:35

@Wolfiefan what kinds? From wearing the collar or something else?

I've always had cats from being young and they have always had collars so it's never o cured to me not too have them on. I always buy the quick release ones- my boy goes through one a month!

Sorry forgot to add that my point in not getting them scanned would be more if someone couldn't be arsed/ diddnt know it was a thing. My thought was that at least with a number someone would call me if they found Dcat somewhere.

From getting trapped and the collar doesn't release.
Being hung.
Getting a leg through the collar which can result in such severe trauma the leg needs amputating.
Years ago I found a collar called beastie bands. Velcro. No way could it cause an issue. But they stopped making them and now most people know to check for microchips so a collar really isn't necessary.

AccidentalyRunToWindsor · 14/10/2017 16:45

Good to know @Wolfiefan thanks. I just want them to be safe and happy 😻

I admit I may be slightly paranoid having watched too many vet programmes! Grin

IHaveBrilloHair · 14/10/2017 16:49

I almost lost one of mine when she got trapped in her quick release collar, she ended up having infected tissue removed and tons of stitches, she'd been trapped for, we think, four days.
None of my cats wear collars now.

IHaveBrilloHair · 14/10/2017 16:52

Wolfie, I've had one knocked over and had to have a leg amputated too, and another bumped, but he's so giant and fat there was probably more damage to the car!

Wolfiefan · 14/10/2017 16:56

I know this is grim but we lost a cat to a traffic accident. They could still read his chip and I got to say goodbye. Sad
New girls are chipped. No collars.

AccidentalyRunToWindsor · 14/10/2017 17:00

Sorry those of you who have lost cats/ had them injured.

My boy was shot a few years back- makes me furious when I think about it.

When my now tripod was found, her infected leg was crawling with maggots.
She made it, she's super cat and still rules the roost here, but never ever collars.
I have four of the gorgeous annoying fluffets.

Toddlerteaplease · 14/10/2017 17:52

Op, it didn’t bother her at all. I panicked and rushed her to the vet in floods of tears. £200for stitches. Have since been advised that as it wasn’t bleeding I could have just left it to heal up it’s self as it was only tiny. Her sister briefly had a feeding tube and the home from that was much bigger and healed in a couple of days!
