Oh I've been given a kitten finding task!

One of the profs at work has a cat shaped hole since his 19year old passed last month. She was a pair originally. He has a big rambling house and teenage children. I suggested CP as he thought people just gave you them! I said it's not like that these days. St Albans doesn't have any young ones in. I was just on my break and he made a point of finding me to say it's my task to find him kittens. I'm very excited! Which branch I wonder? He said he doesn't want people coming round inspecting!

I'm afraid that just about every reputable rescue will inspect the home before placing a cat (or just about any pet). They won't pass judgement on how tidy the house is or anything, just make sure that he doesn't live on a dangerous road (assuming the cat is outdoor) or have major hazards for the cat e.g. jagged broken scrap metal in the garden etc.

EachandEveryone · 13/10/2017 09:58

CP never came to me but where happy photos. I'll have to see if there's any in Hertfordshire isn't it funny how in posh St Albans there are only 2 cats?

There's 3 in North London if he's willing to make the trip. All gorgeous-one female and a pair of males.

crazycatguy · 13/10/2017 10:28

I foster for Cats Protection Lea Valley (adjoining to the St Albans area) and we have kittens :)

Grumpyoldpersonwithcats · 13/10/2017 10:29

While being asked to find kittens would be great fun I'm genuinely curious what your job is where it includes sourcing pets for other members of staff?

EachandEveryone · 13/10/2017 11:45

Omg we are a close knit unit we have worked with each other for longer than I care to remember. We are all pretty close. It's the environment that throws us together!

The Lea Valley ones look like they are reserved

Don't forget the pics ! 😄
Happy hunting.

Fluffycloudland77 · 13/10/2017 13:07

Well the home checks to check for poisonous houseplants, cat flaps that open onto main roads etc.

They won't want to poke around cupboards.

thecatneuterer · 13/10/2017 14:08

We have literally hundreds of kittens but are slightly outside the catchment area. All rescues will have kittens at the moment, we are in the second kitten season of the year. What makes you think they don't? You can't go by websites - most kittens don't make it onto websites.

And all good rescues will do home checks. It's to check out roads/ garden/ windows/ open fires/ chimneys/ access really. They won't want to look round the house particularly and certainly wouldn't be looking in bedrooms or cupboards or anything! They would probably discuss how to keep the kitten in without it escaping until it's old enough or how to make sure it doesn't get stuck up the chimney (we just had to do a chimney rescue job yesterday) and similar stuff.

Why would he find that a problem?

EachandEveryone · 13/10/2017 16:58

I don't know if it would be a problem as such but I suppose when all your cats have been given to you from neighbours etc it's hard to get your head around rescuing one. Don't worry I've pointed him in the right direction! I also said if I ever see mine again I'll grab a couple!

thecatneuterer · 13/10/2017 17:01

Ah yes - yours! Well hopefully they'll turn up soon (and if they don't we still need to get mum done).

EachandEveryone · 13/10/2017 17:26

How long do you give her though? I think we could trap her in a proper trap easily she comes for tea every night

Lancelottie · 13/10/2017 17:30

We weren't homechecked for our rescue cat (though we did all have to visit the rehoming centre en masse).

thecatneuterer · 13/10/2017 17:32

I would give until until 10 to 12 weeks after you think the kittens were born. If you haven't seen them by then they are probably dead. And if they are alive then it will be obvious when the vets look at her as she will have milk. In which case she will need to be neutered and returned within 24 hours - which isn't ideal, but it's something we often do. And any kittens should be fine to be left for that time at that age.

Lancelottie · 13/10/2017 17:33

Try Wood Green maybe?

BarbaraOcumbungles · 13/10/2017 17:33

We weren’t home checked for the rspca they just looked at our house on google maps to make
Sure we weren’t on a main road and that was it.

TCN why do you check for open fires/chimneys?

thecatneuterer · 13/10/2017 17:38

Barbara - open fires set fire to cats' tails. As do candles in fireplaces. It even happened one time when I took a cat to it's new home. There were candles in the fireplace. The cat when for a bit of an explore of it's new room and set fire to his tail. Luckily we got to him before any major damage was done.

And nervous cats in new homes look for places to hide. Chimneys are a place they will go for. As I just said above I was on a chimney rescue mission just this week as a newly adopted cat had gone up a chimney and got stuck. Our home checker should have pointed out the danger and asked the owners to block it somehow - but it was such a huge house maybe she didn't see that room.

Lancelottie · 13/10/2017 17:43

True. My parents' fluffy-tailed (and fluffy-brained) cat managed to ignite her tail in the gas fire. Dad quickly extinguished her with little harm done, except that we had to put up with years of bad jokes about putting the cat out.

EachandEveryone · 13/10/2017 18:00

I do miss my posh candles I must admit.

crazycatguy · 14/10/2017 09:14

We have others that haven't gone up on the website yet - there are, to my knowledge, a group of four.

reallyanotherone · 14/10/2017 09:39

Mine managed to set fire to his whiskers sitting too close to a safety barrier on a gas fire.

I don’t see what we could have done though. The fire was child safe and other than rip it out- then we’d have had no heating.

EachandEveryone · 14/10/2017 10:46

I must admit mine have never destroyed anything. I had to replace the hall carpet with vinyl as they picked it to pieces though. And she did pull every single framed picture down and they smashed to a thousand pieces. Besides that, its all good Hmm

Thanks for your help. Ill send him the links. I cant see him driving into London unfortunately and i cannot be trusted to go into any of these places. Sometimes i wonder about volunteering myself. I dont know if im strong enough though.
