Rescue puppy - what do we need to sort?

Dear all - we've finally made the decision to get a family dog and would ideally like to adopt next July, so that we have lots of time with the pup with the kids too (big teens) I work 3 days a week (8 til 4.15ish) but would sort a walk in the middle of the day on the work days. We have 2 cats so would def need a puppy to help the cats adjust...they're scaredy cats but came from a house with dogs originally, so I'm hopeful.
We have a big garden which needs a bit of new fencing along one side (neighbour not great with replacing....suspect that will be an 'us' job)
What do I need to think about in addition to this? We'd like a big dog if possible so suspect we're on for a long plus shorter walk daily. We'd have to sort kennels for holidays I think, although parents may be able to take (if I can persuade my dm!)

Oh and which rescue group...does it matter or do we register with all?

You might be in the wrong place. This is the cat forum... :) I think there is another one for infidels dog people :)

If you want a big dog, most rescues will ask for 6 ft fencing - it doesn't need to be solid - we have bamboo screening attached to our fence to bring it up to the height.

You'll need to sort out what will happen if you need a long day out - even a day shopping is an issue

If you are thinking of a small puppy, those hours will be too long to leave one. The rescue I foster with has a rule of thumb of no more than 5 hours a day (in total) on their own till they are 1 - remember they need a lot of time putting into house training, obedience etc.

OTOH, a dog over 1, who has already learnt house training, who is known to be cat safe, and isn't a bonkers puppy (and all puppies are bonkers) could fit right into your life

Thanks Dibbler. I think the family are pretty set on a puppy so I think I'll have to do some parental persuading. 6 ft fence should be fine....neighbour will be delighted.

Oh I see! Your primary interest was a dog what was cat safe :). That's all right then! :)

😁 Not sure that I could guarantee cat safe but it's a big issue with rather whussy pussies!

There's a doghouse section on here as well as the litter tray, although there are plenty of dual species owners I think, so you should get get some advice.
I haven't owned dogs,so can't help, but good luck with your pup
