Adopting a rescue cat

I'm looking for postive stories about rehoming/adopting a rescue cat.

I've been applying to all my local charities for two months now and I haven't had any luck so far. I'm wondering what it is about me that means I'm not being chosen.

I know they're supposed to match cats with potential owners to ensure that they're a good fit but in all honesty, I didn't think it would be this difficult.

I've deliberately applied for cats which I think would suit me (so senior cats/adult cats as I'm out at work for 8 hours a day) but I've noticed that the cats I've applied for and not been successful in getting are still on the sites weeks later. Is it the fact that I work? I have a nice big house, big garden. Not on a main road. Fields at the back. No children or other pets.

It feels a bit like being on a dating site and being constantly rejected! Grin

I've had cats before but never had a rescue and I'm wondering if this is normal.

Team cat rescue? My vet deals with them.

When I got my two, I called the rescue and told them roughly what I was after - indoors only, 2 so they could keep each other company when I was at work, preferably not kittens or particularly young. They said they had options, and if I came to visit I could meet them & see how we got on.

I did mention a pair that were on the web site (though slightly younger than I thought I wanted), she said that I needed to come in and see who bonded with me rather than set my mind on them from the web site.

As it happened, I did end up with that same pair but it was touch & go as they'd had a gorgeous couple come in during the week who fit my spec perfectly - but I was claimed by use of The Paw by Girlcat so didn't really have any choice at all Grin.

Moral of the story is, get yourself out there & visit the rescues and your cat(s) WILL claim you. Try the smaller rescues maybe?

Blue Cross blanked me too - I was looking at Bromsgrove. I understand that they can't spend money replying to everyone but it's so frustrating not to know where you're going wrong.

I eventually got two kittens from a lady I heard about who'd taken in a pregnant stray. I wasn't even looking for a kitten (or two for that matter).

Had I not found them my next step was going to be cats protection in Wythall. They are apparently very relaxed and happy for you to just drop in. Worth a try.

I've messaged you.

Have you seen those beautiful Siamese on here?

I was in your shoes I desperately wanted a second cat but I lived in a flat and work 12 hour shifts. Cat Protection in Archway were fab because they recognised that loads of people in London live in flats. I saw my girl she was taken on the website but I rang and asked anyway and the adoption had fallen through I went and picked her up that day. I will say though if you are at work all day a bonded pair would be better. Mine love each other.

Each thank you for the plug for us Smile
I would contact the rescues direct (by phone or in person) and discuss with the staff your home set up etc. There are plenty of cats awaiting homes most will be ok to be left while you're working.

What about the cats protection centre in Hollywood south Birmingham? I've adopted from there before and had a similar lifestyle to you at the time.

They have loads of cats there waiting for adoption. I'm sure one of them would be suitable. I'd go there and look though as the websites of rescue centres are not always up to date (this applies to all cat rescue centres and not just CP)

EachandEveryone · 05/10/2017 20:24

Omg Dixie is divine or the little one with one eye. I must stop looking at those sites!

CruzRamirez · 05/10/2017 21:09

Vipers that's the one I meant too, I've heard very good things about it. I'm sure the OP would find a suitable kitty or two there.

CruzRamirez · 05/10/2017 21:11

Look at Trevor. Love it!

Vinorosso74 · 05/10/2017 21:15

Trevor looks all tough but I bet once he's settled he's a big softie.

LadyGagarden · 05/10/2017 21:25

OP I’m near Birmingham, if you’d like an indoor cat you could have my boss’ (see my new post)!! We got our rescue from the RSPCA in Frankley. I didn’t apply on line though, just went in and chose one. I think they did ask about if someone would be in most of the time. Our cat was 2 when we got her.

Nestofvipers · 05/10/2017 21:59

cruz, yes I'm sure she would too. From what I remember about it, they have far more cats than are on the website. Look at Melanie. She's so cute, I'd take her home in a flash.

I love my little brummie cat from there-she's currently sleeping curled up around my foot and purring really loudly.

BacallsEyes · 06/10/2017 07:37

Thanks for all the tips everyone. It seems that the way to go is to apply in person so I’m going to do that. When I get sorted I’ll post a picture!
