Is £125 expensive for a non-pedigree kitten?

Just curious really, I've only had one pedigree cat and she was fairly expensive but all the others were never for bought for more than £50.

I'm sort of looking for a kitten I need to persuade dh! and whilst £125 seems reasonable for a part-bred it seems rather pricey for a moggie. Confused

I've not bought a cat for a fair while so might just be out of the loop somewhat! Any thoughts?

Lots of kittens for sale at the moment, here they are around £25-£50 each.

I tried to get a rescue kitten a few years ago but was refused because we live to close to a main road (a 40mph road).

I had 2 for £140 from RSPCA, into a home with 3dc and a dog.
Local rescue centre has kittens for £60 each fully vaccinated and spayed/neutered.

Yes, £125 for a moggie is ridiculous!

littlewoollypervert · 02/10/2017 15:49

Lots of kittens still in rescues here, I got my two for €20 each but gave a bit more as a donation.

I think it might depend on where you are in the country. Friends of ours paid £100 for a moggie kitten and we paid £125 for a moggie kitten. I'd love to adopt a kitten - but the rescue centres don't like adopting to families with young children (DD is 5 and we had 2 cats previously, so she's used to cats, but they still don't like it) or if you work.

haveacupoftea · 02/10/2017 16:03

£125!! You would have to pay people to take them off your hands round here.

haveacupoftea · 02/10/2017 16:06

What you could do is ring your local vets and ask if anyone brings stray kittens to give you a ring.

Girliefriendlikesflowers · 02/10/2017 16:10

Yes that is ridiculous for moggy.

There are so many cats in rescues please don't be part of the problem by buying a kitten off someone who should have had their cat neutered.

Polyethyl · 02/10/2017 16:27

We got our cat from Cats Protection. They were sensibly unfussy about who they allow to adopt.
Unlike Celia Hammond trust who appeared to be bonkers.
You can get a kitten from the rescue charities, and they'll charge you far less than £150. That's a rip off. Cats' Protection charged me £70 for my lovely girl.

CatchIt · 02/10/2017 18:13

Funnily enough I wouldn't have a problem paying £125 for a moggy from a charity as I know it would go to the charity rather than some grabby dope who couldn't be arsed to get their cat spayed and thought they'd turn a tidy profit from not bothering to get their cat spayed!

We paid a fair bit for our rescues but it was for two. It included the vet check and wormer and deflea etc they had already had. They also offered very cheap spaying. If we used their vet. We didn't take them up on that. Used our own bet as it was closer but then we had to send off a form to prove we had spayed them. Great idea.

QueenieMum · 02/10/2017 20:13

I certainly wouldn't pay that! You might have to be patient and wait for the right rescue cat to become available. As PPs have said it is a very worthwhile route to a new pet. If you didn't want to do that it might be worth asking a few local vets if they know any reputable breeders - and which to avoid!

Briette · 03/10/2017 00:02

Our local rescue is flakey and useless but that Cat Chat site makes it so easy to find alternatives. In the end with my last cats I found a slightly farther away rescue who put a huge amount of effort into matching people with suitable pets. They had plenty of cats to suit any circumstances - we're out all day at work but we have independent cats who use that time to nap and play together, and the arrangement works for all of us!

They also had cats suitable for young families and dogs, but we ignored those since they'd presumably be in greater demand (and indeed, all the ones we saw have since been adopted). Once you find a sensible shelter the rest will fall into place.

greentea4me · 03/10/2017 00:14

Sorry. It that's extortionate for a moggy and sounds very dodgy. They shouldn't be making so much money from not spaying their cat. Look at cats protection there are lots of sweet cats ready and waiting for a loving home. The black cats are particularly in need of homes as many people are superstitious Sad

We paid £180 for 2 moggy kittens from a cat rescue charity 18 months ago - they had been hand reared, microchipped, wormed, flead and had 1st vaccinations. We were happy to pay it.

ZanyMobster · 05/10/2017 12:13

I have just got 2 kittens from a rehoming charity. They were born in their care and have been so well looked after. I tried to give them £100 for both but they said they only ever charge £20 each. I gave them £60 in the end as they were both microchipped. I will donate more at Christmas so they'll still get the extra money.

I wasn't keen to rehome a cat as wanted the DCs to have them from kittens and learn to bond with them/look after them etc. We got 2 together as they were inseparable so it seemed cruel.

ZanyMobster · 05/10/2017 12:15

Sorry they'd had 2 vet check ups and wormed/flead also. £20 each was definitely not enough but lovely that they just are happy to have them going to a good home.
