Adopting a 5 month old kitten

Hi,
Looking for some advice. Having lost our two lovely, elderly boys over the last year we are going to see an abandoned 5 month old kitten on Sunday with a view to bringing him home. We've not had a young cat before as we took our boys in when they were 9. As we will need to buy food in advance as all the shops will be shut by the time we get home can anyone advise whether at 5 months he will still need kitten food as I never thought to ask the charity when I called?

We've not had a litter tray since our boys started going outside so can anyone suggest a good cat litter and advise whether we go for clumping or non-clumping so I can pick some up tomorrow?
Heading out shortly so apologies if I don't come back to this thread until tomorrow but I would be grateful for any suggestions.
Thanks.

You need to speak to the charity. It would be best to keep the kitten on the same food (to avoid upset tummies!) and the same litter (to avoid dirty protests!)
I was told to switch to adult food once my girls were neutered.

Yes ask them it will probably be Felix kitten easy to get hold of. I like clumping litter I suppose it's personal taste. Get a deep litter tray if you can. Are you just getting the basics now? Don't forget one of those laser pointer things! Amazon Prime have them and also worlds best limping litter is on offer there it's dear but dies the job it's very easy to remove the clumps and they say it lasts a month but I do mine every fiortnigjht. Six months is a fab age! I wonder what his story is? Don't forget photos,

Thanks so much for the replies. I'll grab some clumping litter later and hold off on food until I've spoken to them. I've discovered there's a Tesco down the road from where we're collecting so can pop in there after. We have everything else like litter tray, cat box etc from our last cats. Although we will probably need to replace the scratching post and get some toys. It's going to be so lovely to have a cat again. I can't wait. And yes photos will follow 😊 Thanks.

I guess the other thing you need to know is what litter he's used to mine really doesn't like change so you might have to do it gradually

Depending on age of kitten clumping litter may not be recommended. Check with the shelter what they are on. It needs to stay the same.

Yes get him kitten food. My little guy stayed on kitten food and warmed up kitten milk till he was one.

Thanks again. We're going to wait until we collect him so we can buy him the same litter and food. Easier now I know there is a Tesco local to the foster home. Just being a bit eager wanting to dash out and buy things for him but we do want to make sure we get the right things so he's not upset more than he needs to be by being moved. I appre iate all the advice.

Good luck. Remember to put something waterproof under the cat carrier just in case. Mine did a poo, wee and vomited too on the way home. Lovely!
