Getting my kitten back inside!

Mildred went to the vet yesterday to be spayed. It was quite an ordeal as she hates the cat carrier. DP collected her and wasn't given any instructions regarding after care so he let her outside as normal. She's is around 5 or 6 months old, fully vaccinated and now spayed. We found her outside and she has been going outside since the day we found her with no problems.

Anyway, she went straight out yesterday afternoon and didn't come back for tea. Didn't come back for her favourite treat or for her favourite toy. She slept outside behind the shed under a bush this morning I've taken food out and put it practically under her nose and she hasn't eaten it. She's now slunk off under the shed completely.

I don't want to hear what an idiot DP is because I have already given him the 3rd degree, but I would welcome any practical suggestions to get her to trust us again and come inside!

Tuna, pilchards, freshly roast chicken, dreamies combined with time and patience.

londonloves · 27/09/2017 07:50

I second the chicken, always works with mine. And rattle of treats.

NickMyLipple · 27/09/2017 07:55

She usually loves chicken, But alas not at the moment :(

I wonder also if she's a bit poorly after her op and doesn't feel hungry.

She was really stressed out getting in the carrier so I can't imagine she likes us at all right now.

Been rattling a pot of biscuits for hours. Usually she just comes when you call her name so it's really unusual for her to just ignore :(

I'm truly gutted.

I need to go and buy more smelly food but I can't have her outside for another night alone...

Did the vet give you any pain killers fir her? I never went back for my girls check up but I was told to give her the pain relief for five days. I imagine if you leave the door open she will come eventually. Does she use a litter tray?

Grumpyoldpersonwithcats · 27/09/2017 17:18

Have you got her in yet?

NickMyLipple · 27/09/2017 19:06

I realised there are 2 threads for some reason...

She's still not in. Very much hiding under the shed (whereas before she was just behind it but out of reach).

I'm say outside in the pouring rain with a bowl of pilchards and a pack of dreamies and her favourite toy, gently chatting to her but there's nothing at all - she isn't coming in :(

I think you need to take drastic action and consider jacking up one side of the shed to get her out. While I don't know your cat - her behaviour may suggest she is in pain and you have no way of knowing if she has opened up the stitches.

NickMyLipple · 27/09/2017 19:26

I said that to DP but he thought I was joking! When he first got back from work he saw her behind the shed but she's since retreated under it. I'm also worried that she hasn't eaten for nearly 48 hours as she was starved before her op. Her poor brother is desperately trying to help and even got under the shed himself to help get her out...

I've called local cats protection and asked to borrow a cat trap but that was a message I left and I'm sure she now has a psychological fear of cages...

Realistically how does one jack up the side of a shed?

Ideally (and if the shed isn't too old) empty the shed and then get two trolley jacks on one side. If it's a small shed on a concrete base - a couple of strong people may be able to tip it up from one side.

EsmesBees · 27/09/2017 19:33

Bless her! She sounds really freaked out. Can you push anything, like a broom handle, under the shed to try and entice her out? I'd normally say she'll emerge when she's hungry but as pp say, the stitches may have opened and you don't want an infection.

NickMyLipple · 27/09/2017 20:06

She's out she's out!!!!! Not sure what caused it but I was washing up and she appeared at the door. Have locked her in now, and she's managed to get herself to the top of the cat tree (She struggled though, she may be in pain?) And she's having a little rest.

I will see how she is tomorrow but I think I might need to ring the vet because I do think she's in pain. The wound looks fine, clean and dry.

I'm so relieved she is in!

awww
maybe she's just discombobulated?

EachandEveryone · 27/09/2017 22:37

Is it only mine them than got five days worth of metacam post op? Keep her in for abit now i would. Is she going to be an out out cat?

SteelyPip · 28/09/2017 11:23

How is she doing?

I read the thread yesterday and was so relieved she'd come in.Smile

NickMyLipple · 28/09/2017 11:28

She's not been good at all 🤒

I took her back to the vet this morning because she's cold, lethargic, not eating or drinking or pooing or weeing.

They gave her some vitamin b12, antibiotics and pain relief medication. She's struggling to stand and is very wobbly but she's actually had some food and drink now, so I'm hoping the worst has passed and she's on the road to recovery.

Are we allowed to say your husband is an idiot now then?? ;)

My newest dog got spayed a few weeks ago, I was horrified she was sent home without pain relief or ABs. Apparently they don't anymore??
She ended up needing ABs a week later.

Stupid.

SteelyPip · 28/09/2017 11:33

Poor little mite, what a worry for you.

That's a really good sign though if she's eating and drinking. Hopefully she'll get stronger and brighter really quickly. Flowers

NickMyLipple · 28/09/2017 16:03

Bless him - he just thought it would be better to let her get on with life as normal given that it was so stressful getting into the carrier.

I'm very relieved that she's at least had something to drink and a tiny bit of calories in some kitten milk and lickylix. She's not perked up much and is still very lethargic and sleepy but I feel like she has been through the worst and she's getting better.

The painkillers will knock her out probably. I bet she's fine tomorrow. I gave mine the Sainsbury's plain chicken cat food after it's from the taste the difference range.

SteelyPip · 29/09/2017 09:42

Hi,
Is she more responsive today? How are you? Hopefully the meds and sleep have started to help.

NickMyLipple · 29/09/2017 10:19

She woke me up by pawwing my face - best feeling ever as it means she made it up the stairs!! She seems much much better today and she ate all her breakfast and had done a poo, so frankly I am thrilled!

That's made my day! Grin Brilliant news!
