Best breed for indoor cat?

Just wondering? Thinking of getting a cat, that can be indoors and is okay being alone in the day? If no such cat exists, rats it is Grin I'd definitely be with it all evenings though!

Ragdoll

Floralnomad · 25/09/2017 20:25

My mum has an indoor Ragdoll , he's 15 and has never ventured outside however he definitely wouldn't want to be home alone all day he likes to have someone to pander to his every whim at all times . Rats are excellent pets .

DBro has always had Burmese indoor only cats. His have always seemed happy & healthy. They did try a few times to take them in the garden on a lead - happy in the harness, but hysterical with panic at crossing the doorway. i think their boldest ever one (out of 5 over the years) did once go out long enough to sniff the nearest plant on the patio...

Siberian.

They're basically teddies.

Rag doll

WineBeforeCake · 25/09/2017 21:47

My rag doll (and my Burmese before her) is desperate to escape outside. She is an absolute demon for spotting a semi open door when taking the rubbish out, etc and making a run for freedom —the sodding main road—

But generally yes, they are happy indoor cats.

Wolfiefan · 25/09/2017 21:49

I wouldn't get a specific breed thinking it could stay in. Our Burmese would've ripped the door off its hinges rather than stay in. Better to get an older rescue not used to going out or one that has a medical reason for not going out.

Sweetpea302 · 25/09/2017 21:49

Another vote for Ragdolls. Gorgeous cats (some are almost dog like in their devotion). I would absolutely get two littermates if you can though - they can get terribly lonely and bored on their own.

TheCatMonty · 25/09/2017 21:58

@Wolfiefan I actually went to our local rescue to be told "I wouldn't be suitable" Confused due to working in the week and planning on having them indoors. All the older cats apparently need someone who is at home most of the time, etc.

It's not possible for everyone, just like fostering/adopting children isn't.

Thanks for the replies!

@KingJoffreysRestingCuntface you're cat is absolutely beautiful!

You went to one rescue? There will be others who have different policies.
I wouldn't get a kitten and keep it in. I can't believe any breeds don't need the stimulation going outside provides. Any more than there being dog breeds that don't need to be walked.
An alternative would be to cat proof your garden or provide a run.

MiddleClassProblem · 25/09/2017 22:00

What is the cat meant to do all day when you're out? Outside they can chase things, climb about, discover things, hunt things, play with things, smell things etc

You really need to thing about the enrichment side first.

TurquoiseChevrotain · 25/09/2017 22:01

I have a Russian Blue/Devon Rex and she's a happy in door cat. She does cry when she is alone and she knows we are in but in a room she can't get to but seems okay when we are out for the day. She is very loving towards all the family but hates strangers! Sad beautiful breed though and so cuddly! Her fur is odd though... wirey Grin not going to lie, she does try to get out, but that's only because we have an outdoor cat too, but she shits herself if we let her have a wonder around the garden.

TheCatMonty · 25/09/2017 22:03

@Wolfiefan some top breeders say they won't sell their cats unless they are indoors. Why do some people always say to get a cat from a rescue? On most rescue sites I have visited they require someone to be at home. I don't want to Hmm

I would like to raise a specific breed, thanks.

@MiddleClassProblem some cats aren't into that

Siberian. But only get an indoor cat if you are actually going to be home in the daytime.

So you want a pedigree? Fine.
But you can't expect a breed of cat to offer a guarantee it won't want to go out. Especially if you are out all day. It's not fair. Focus on what would give the cat the best quality of life.

TheCatMonty · 25/09/2017 22:07

Yes I want a pedigree. I live in a flat... It won't be able to go out.

MiddleClassProblem · 25/09/2017 22:09

While some cats aren't active all cats want entertainment and with non active cats that tends to come with company. Sounds like you have considered a cat sitter or someone to come in and give them attention to break up their day.

Some cats will sleep a lot of that time but it doesn't mean their not lonely.

Wolfiefan · 25/09/2017 22:13

A minute ago you said you went to a rescue?
A pedigree kitten alone all day in a flat? That is no life for a pet. No reputable breeder should agree to that.

TheCatMonty · 25/09/2017 22:15

I did go to a rescue? I've also looked at various cats on rescue Facebooks that list the specific requirements for each cat and "only get in touch if you reach the specifications"

Like I said, if no such cat exists, I will go for rats. I'm not that selfish.

Persians are awesome! Affectionate and sweet but a bit thick. Mine go out into the garden but aren’t bothered about it.

Toddlerteaplease · 25/09/2017 22:16

I work 13 hour shifts and they are absolutely fine on their own. (I had a camera to check up on them)

Wolfiefan · 25/09/2017 22:17

No such cat exists.
Rats are awesome.

Allergictoironing · 25/09/2017 23:01

If you are going to be out all day do what I did - get 2 Grin. They keep each other well occupied & entertained.

I had problems trying to find a rescue that would home cats as indoor, but keep trying as I did find one who were very grateful that i wanted a) 2 together and b) indoors - they happened to have 2 pairs of cats that were bonded, and both pairs needed to be indoors for different reasons.
