Help lily exposure

I was sent lots of flowers by friends and family following a bereavement, some of which were lilies, and in the haze of it all I forgot to keep them out of reach of my cats.

This was 3 weeks ago and currently seem to be fine so I'd thought they'd not come into contact with the flowers but one cat drooled a few times a couple of weeks ago. I didn't know this could be a symptom of ingesting lily until having researched it now after wondering why he drooled (my cat has a habit of snuffling faces, so just thought he had been over-excited?)

I know I've been horribly reckless and stupid but my mind is all over the place right now. Are there any signs I should be looking for to know I should get them to a vet ASAP?

They die within a couple of days of contact. If this was three weeks ago you're ok.

But for future reference don't just keep cats out of the way - don't allow lilies in the house at all. It's the only way to be safe.

You're fine, you would know by now. I love lilies and had lots of them before I knew they were dangerous and my cats survived my ignorance. You'll never do it again, I'm sure.

Thanks for the responses and thank god, what a relief Sad definitely will not be doing it again!! Can't bear the thought of losing my cats as well.

Might be a silly question, but is this ALL lilies? I haven't got any cats (at the moment, but that might change soon Grin) and I'm wondering about potted peace lilies? The structure of the plant is very different to the cut flower version with their big yellow staining stamens.

Sorry to jump on your post OP.

Peace lilies are also poisonous but not in the same way as other lilies.

Dolceandgabbana14 · 23/09/2017 08:41

Thanks Chemenger. I'll pass mine onto someone before I get any furry friends then Smile

Being ignorant, I had a potted peace lily, the only plant I ever kept alive, for years. In the end my last kittens killed it but repeatedly pushing it off tables and finally scaling a seven foot bookcase and throwing the plant off it. They must have known it had to go.
Poinsettias are poisoned as well, not as deadly as lilies but still not worth having if you have cats.

Dolceandgabbana14 · 23/09/2017 09:13

They're not silly, are they?

Thanks for info on poinsettia as well, I didn't know that!

DH accidentally bought lilies. We kept the door shut to the room they were in but a 30 second lapse one day cost us 500 quid in vets bills. She lived to tell the tale but never again.

We caught Ernie in time as he was about to eat a Day Lilly leaf..He saw the vet a few days later for something else and his eyes nearly popped out when I told him...We covered the lillies for a year but dug them up earlier this year.

He seems to love any green grass shaped leaves....apart from actual cat grass which he usually ignores. He had decimated my pond grass
