worming a feisty cat. Please help

My kittens are 6 months old. The girls is a gentle, compliant thing so worming drops are not an issue.
The male is feisty. I have tried drops and he half scratched me to death last time I tried to administer them. So, have tablets from the vets which I have crushed up and tried to disguise in strong tasting tuna,. He can however, taste it and is ignoring the food. What can I do? He hasn't got worms but is behind on his dose.

I'm liking the sound of lick e lix- not personally obviously! Never heard of it before.

One of mine is a horror to get tablets down. And picks them out of anything they're concealed in. But I tried Lik-e-Lix with no real expectation of success, and it worked! No drama. So I agree with PP, try that.

The panacur paste you squirt in the cat's mouth? That's difficult...

Panacur granules must taste alright because the other one ate that in his food. He ate more than normal! Bizarre.

Advocate covers fleas, roundworm, lungworm, heartworm and ear mites. Only really tapeworm missing.

Beaphar Worming Cream is the paste I used. She won't touch Lick-e-lix or pill pockets at all, the little minx. Physical application is the only way for me, even the vet struggles with her.

AllToadsLeadToHome · 20/09/2017 02:32

I used to keep the little tube in my pocket or under the cushion and during the daily cuddle on my lap at lunchtime I would continue stroking and sneak it on. He always knew and would glare at me and get off.

It was much easier to get the vet to do it if it was a pill, unless it could be crushed in to little bits and hidden in something he really liked, ie: rolled into little balls of fish or chicken but it took ages as I fed them one at a time as treats to ensure it all went in.

ProperLavs · 20/09/2017 06:59

so looking on the back of the prinovox flea packet from the vets I see it covers everything but tapeworm. So why did they also sell me worming tablets?

I want to know why my cats are still scratching after the flea treatments., even though I can'r see any fleas. That's another thread I suppose.....

The worming granules changed my life when I found them! Only in as much as I could wear short sleeves again. Our late Tortie was particularly feisty!

They must taste okay as the food disappears and so do the worms! Can't get the Panacur on Amazon anymore but the other 2 brands seem just as successful.

bonzo77 · 20/09/2017 16:23

Am I the only one who doesn't worm the cat? I've done it maybe 3 times ever. She's 7. She's had tablets for other things, but I think she's particularly easy (and I'm extremely no- nonsense) as she's never given me much trouble. So that's helpful!

Wolfiefan · 20/09/2017 16:27

Cats need regular treatment. For fleas and worms.
Proper I haven't heard of that treatment. Was it over the counter? Advocate is great but doesn't cover all worms. Hence the need for wormer too.

yawning801 · 20/09/2017 16:33

Can you give him a handful of biscuits and a few treats and put bits of tablet in with them?

ProperLavs · 20/09/2017 16:59

wolfie it's vet prescribed- i think it's the same company that make stronghold, same ingredients but cheaper.
Well then I only need to get a spot on tapeworm thing since the flea treatment protects against many different mites, mange and worms.

I use advocate for fleas and milbemax for worms. They only need half a worming tablet if under 4kg. With one cat I hid it in a bit of webbox stick but the other I had to open his mouth and stick the pill down his throat

LivingInMidnight · 20/09/2017 17:29

proper I was told it was the same ingredients as advocate but made by a different company! I think I checked at the time. That vet didn't sell advocate.

I'd just get the granules and treat every now and again as most are covered by prinovox.

LivingInMidnight · 20/09/2017 17:31

Oh and you can get a droncit spot on just for tapeworms, so that would work too.

ProperLavs · 20/09/2017 17:44

must be advocate then!

My dog just eats it wrapped up in a chicken slice.

Dogs are stupid tho ;-)

RubbishMantra · 20/09/2017 21:32

I use Profender too, as far as I'm aware it does the same worms as Dronal et al. The tablets just weren't worth the aggro - MCat would get an attack of the vapours and Little M would just quietly hide the tablet (after licking his nose) and spit it out when I wasn't looking.

ragged · 20/09/2017 21:40

3 person job in this house.
We also have ... Broadline? it's a spot-on-back-neck stuff, very expensive, but includes dewormer.

KitFizz · 11/12/2020 02:36

My kitty is a one for fishing things out of food with his tongue! I'm using Drontal tablets, and last time disguised in Lick-e-Lix, but had tablet broken into halves, he needs a tablet and a half, as he weighs over 4kg. I wrapped tablets in pill pockets too, in case tablets, dissolved, added a few Dreamies, and he ate the lot! However, this time, he sussed them out, ate everything but spat out pill pocket with tablet, onto the floor! 🙀 Should I now just put them in Lick-e-lix without pill pocket, and add a few treats? He will probably lick them out! People have said not to crush Drontal, as it gives off a bitter taste, and then my lad won't go near or touch anything! He isn't keen on spot on, so don't want to do another as well as the flea one! 😺

vanillandhoney · 12/12/2020 16:16

There's no way I could get tablets into my cats! We use spot on treatments, ideally when they're sleeping or eating Grin

One of our cats needed oral medication once and it was awful. It took two of us to treat him and he was SO angry. He was a new rescue which didn't help!

Glitterinthegrey · 13/12/2020 14:58

My cat hates the spot on stuff... She knows what it bloody looks like, and will hide if she sees us getting it ready. I have to hold her tight and husband does it - she fights though. Never had to get a tablet into her, dread to think what she would be like then 🤣

Paranoidmarvin · 13/12/2020 17:30

I pay the vet to worm and de flea him. Not doing that. I’m not mad Grin
