Which rescue charity?

We lost our beautiful boy last month after 18 years and, despite vowing not to have another, I've found myself scouring the websites of local rescue charities. My last cat was a rescue so I'd like to go down that route again. Can any fellow rescuers tell me which organisation you chose and why? Visited one of my local rescue places today & their cattery has been closed for the last 10 days due to cat flu which has put me off getting one from there if I'm honest. I've sent emails to various places but keen to get the views of fellow cat lovers on here too.

St Francis Persian rescue. Near Ripon. Got my two from there. Small rescue, run by lively people.

Toddlerteaplease · 18/09/2017 09:23

*lovely. Not just Persians either.

Viques I don't think either of the local vets offers that kind of 'service' but it's worth a phone call. What a great idea & a caring vet.

I've spent a LOT of time on t'internet this weekend and I've contacted 2 of my local rescue centres today. Cat Chat is fantastic so I'll keep my eye on that site over the coming weeks.

Thank you all for your responses Smile

That's a good point in fact. All the vets round our way seem to have a few cats they need to find homes for. And they have a notice board of cats that people need to find new homes for. It's definitely worth checking your local vets.

gingerh4ir · 18/09/2017 16:09

we have a RSPCA tiger. Came neutered, microchipped, had vaccinations etc.

We have 2 pretty full on DC (one with comes SN) and they were really great with their advice, recommend a couple of very relaxed and child friendly cats. We went with the one that howled at us. I didn't realise back then that there are lots of cat charities around so never looked at the others but RSPCA was great for us.

AllToadsLeadToHome · 18/09/2017 16:45

Our vet sometimes has a cat needing a home, they put a poster in the waiting room but also put a photo on their FB page. Our previous vet did this too, once because the lady owner had cancer. I felt so sad to see that poster.

Mine were from a local shelter, small but has been running well over 100 years. I was there recently and the lovely lady who looked after my girl was telling me how much she misses her. I've had her almost a year! It was so sweet how much she cared about her. I'm further north than you though but if you were nearby I'd recommend it in a heartbeat.

I'm actually considering rejoining Facebook just to send her pictures.

QueenieMum · 18/09/2017 17:22

AllToads that is sad. I've seen posts on a few Rescue sites who are trying to help owners rehome their pets due to a change in circumstances 😞

Ahh Living, what a lovely lady. Can we clone her and distribute them all across the country?!

Can I just say this is a lovely thread. After reading some recently where the owners came across as quite irresponsible it's good to know the OP wants a rescue and the advise has been positive Smile

LivingInMidnight · 18/09/2017 17:51

Queenie I'll get started on the cloning machine! We were both welling up looking at pictures, she was telling me she talked about her every week, it was a bit ridiculous. Girl cat was in the shelter nearly a year because she was so timid. I'm so grateful that I know someone loved her all that time. 😭

They don't always put all the cats on the websites...

QueenieMum · 18/09/2017 19:31

Vino, thank you! Blush It's great to see people having successes with lots of different charities both small and large and giving kitties another chance. I hope I can have my second good rescue cat experience soon too.

Living - from the research I've done they definitely don't put all the cats on their websites. Sad to hear they are regularly full but good to know they also have lists of adopters who are waiting for the right cat. You have clearly adopted a special girl from a special lady

as your in the midlands look up cramar cat rescue on facebook they are a fab rescue and always have lots of cats and kittens up for adoption, if you were in yorkshire i would reccomend yorkshire cat rescue the one i work for

QueenieMum · 18/09/2017 20:09

Thanks Issey. I'm Yorkshire born and bred so if I wasn't in exile in the Midlands I'd definitely pay you a visit!

We recently adopted our cat through a local vets who have several RSPCA cats placed with them for re-homing.

The vet put a post up on their FB page showing the cats they had, and we took a quick decision to adopt Rosie as she is calm even though we have two young DC's. She has settled in really well Smile

Another successful vet adoption story, I genuinely wouldn't have thought to look at vets. Thanks Dave - I think I've seen you on another thread, beautiful cat and lovely duvet cover!

There was a post on chat asking about help for an abandoned cat, I think it was entitled 'abandoned animal'. The cat has been left in an empty house only getting fed, it looked a beautiful cat and was in the Midlands.

That's the thread.

DavetheCat2001 · 19/09/2017 14:05

Thanks Queenie Flowers

Ski37 · 19/09/2017 15:46

I got mine from my local blue cross- they were great. He had 1 month free pet plan insurance and asked that if I ever needed to rehoming him that I contacted them first. I would recommend looking at them if there are any local to you.

QueenieMum · 19/09/2017 20:42

Thanks Fennel. That beautiful cat all alone 😢 I've been offered 3 cats by a friend too. This is why I needed the sensible advice from you all because if it was left to me I'd just go round collecting cats and bringing them home!

fenneltea · 20/09/2017 14:17

There's nothing wrong with that Queenie Grin

AllToadsLeadToHome · 20/09/2017 23:38

Pet Forums have a rescue and adoption section for cats, and often there are cats needing a home urgently that come up on the Cat Chat section (not the Cat Chat site, that is something else).

cozietoesie · 21/09/2017 00:02

I'd recommend acquiring a cat who is well known to the rescuers. (My own new boy came from a breed rescue - and I 'think' that they made the arrangement because they needed someone who was experienced with the breed. He's turned out to be exceptionally hard going.)
