Biting kitten tips

Need some advice.

We have a 12 week old kitten. She's hand reared as her Mum died when she was a week old. We've been hand rearing her with the help of various staff at the local vets (the whole saga was their fault).

Anyway, in the last few days she's got really bitey. We've been doing all the usual - saying no, removing her from the situation etc. I just wondered if anyone had any further tips? I'm thinking she's going to be harder to train out of that because she didn't learn from her mum and siblings as she only had a week with them.

My two older cats are no help. One will curl up and sleep next to her overnight, but won't have anything to do with her in the day (he was exactly the same with her mother). My other cat won't even be in the same room as her yet and will hiss if she tries to go near him (he's always like that with a new cat or person and will come round - kitten reacts well to him by dropping down to her belly/backing off/not annoying him too much etc).

We're playing with her with toys, keeping fingers and toes away as much as possible. It's mainly me she's biting tbh and it's as if she's developed a fascination with my glasses!

We fostered kittens for years. Can you give her a teething ring? A solid one, not gel-filled.

lalalalyra · 15/09/2017 20:11

I shall try that, thanks Hercules.

I've always had cats, and even had a couple of kittens, but never this young and never one that didn't have the kind of 'basic training' a mum gives her kitten!

lala I read your updated post, so sorry about your cat and the other kittens.

My cat likes to bite these www.amazon.co.uk/Petstages-Orkakat-Wiggle-Worm-Cat/dp/B002U5PGLQ/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1505503495&sr=8-2&keywords=Cat+worm+toy&tag=mumsnetforum-21

She also likes pencils Hmm and sticks.

My last cat was a bitey one. I used to use a Cookie Monster hand puppet so she could get it out of her system. She was much less bitey as she grew up. but still a bit bitey

She was also partial to a mr flibble puppet.

My kitten is a 5 month old rescue who was probably taken a bit early from mum tho nothing like what you have been thru. We are finally starting to come out of his bitey phase. He bit when he was teething at the age yours is but also when he was bored/overexcited/thwarted/happy ... it was expressive but not of any one thing. My forearms and hands have taken the brunt of it. I withdraw attention - he's all about human attention especially with just having the one of him - it seems finally to be working. I also had wondered about a teething toy - might be worth a try?? Hopefully she too will settle like mine has. He's more snuggly and less bitey now.

She will grow out of it, all kittens can get bitey, they think its playing

Mine liked the wiggly worm thingy linked to upthread. Poor little thing had a terrible time teething, he'd stand up on his back paws, tongue sticking right out, and scrabble at his mouth with his front paws.

lalalalyra · 16/09/2017 20:13

I've ordered the wiggly worm and a couple of other things.

Hopefully she'll grow out of it soon enough - fingers and toes are fine, she's just started launching herself at noses!
