'Tasty' dry kitten food?

ContraryToPopularBelief · 13/09/2017 14:07

My kitten is fairly picky about his food. He won't eat the Whiskas pouches and he picks out all the interesting nuggets from the dry Whiskas food.

He's a bit on the dinky side so I want to make sure he's eating enough. Any recommendations for a complete food that are really 'tasty' and appealing?

So hard to tell - every cat has different taste same as people. My NDN's cat adores Asda Tiger pouches & loves "people" food, mine won't touch anything except Felix AGAIL and get very sniffy if I offer them roast chicken or ham. I have 2 different recipe dry foods from the same manufacturer (indoor recipe & anti-hairball) and though they happily eat both they definitely prefer the anti-hairball.

I'm afraid it's trial and error to see which he likes!

Mine liked the AVA dry kitten food from pets at home. Has a high meat content too

JessicaEccles · 13/09/2017 16:31

Harringtons Chicken and Rice- smells like an old fashioned grain store and mine love it.

My kitten loves Coshida from Aldi I'm not sure how good it is quality wise so I mix it with Hilla Sciemce Plan. I'm looking forward to the day she's not on kitten food anymore. She likes IAMs wet which is expensive for what it is

ContraryToPopularBelief · 14/09/2017 21:46

I think you are right about trial and error. I bought a bag of Tesco's own dry food for 90p and he wolfed it down. He does also like real chicken and ham etc.

My kitten loved Felix wet

RubbishMantra · 16/09/2017 01:57

Mine love Orijen dry - as dry food goes, it's probably the best one. High meat content and no grains. Sadly they won't eat complete wet food. The Orijen in the red bag is for kittens and adult cats.

EachandEveryone · 16/09/2017 11:54

Purizon is a rip off of Orijen. Both from Zooplus.

RubbishMantra · 16/09/2017 18:12

Funnily enough, Each, I've just bought the little princes a sack of Purizon. Hope they can't tell the difference, as it's considerably kinder to the purse.

EachandEveryone · 16/09/2017 18:52

Yes ive just ordered the three packs. Im tempted to give it to the six month old as well.

MaddeningtheUnhelpful · 16/09/2017 19:18

My cats consider go cat to be crack for them. Even to the point of stealing the neighbours. I know it's utter crap for them though so they only get it occasionally

RubbishMantra · 18/09/2017 16:46

Just to report, the Purizon's been a big hit with the MantraCats. It has an oilier sort of sticky feel to it that they seem to find irresistible. I'm having to measure out the correct amount instead of just topping up the bowl when needed. Left to self regulate they'll overeat this one.

thecatneuterer · 18/09/2017 17:20

Be very careful with dry food, particularly for male cats. There is a direct link between urinary crystals/blocked bladders, which can be fatal, and cheap dried food in male cats. By cheap I mean Whiskas/ Go Cat etc etc (and of course Tesco's own).

To be on the safe side either feed only wet food, or make sure it really is a quality dry - such as Lily's Kitchen, Arden Grange, James Wellbeloved.

I'm on the fence about Harringtons, while it is certainly cheap it says it's grain and additive free, so I really don't know. If you feel you have to give dry and really can't afford anything better, then Harringtons is probably your best bet of the cheap foods.

EachandEveryone · 18/09/2017 18:39

Purizon is great isn't it? Did you get the variety packs? How much are you giving them? I don't think I'm going to get the kitten version because I know the big one will pinch it.

Orangebird69 · 18/09/2017 18:41

I haven't had a kitten turn it's nose up at Royal Canin kitten biscuits yet. And I've fed 100s of them.

dementedpixie · 18/09/2017 18:43

I didnt think royal canin was that great ingredient wise considering how expensive it is

Orangebird69 · 18/09/2017 18:55

The op didn't ask for the highest meat content though. And I don't think it's expensive at all for a complete food. Especially if you buy it in the 4 or 10kg bags.

ContraryToPopularBelief · 19/09/2017 10:17

It's not about price at all. I'm happy to spend a reasonable amount IF he'll eat it. He is just not in to wet food at all! I put tuna out the other night and he nibbled it a bit then left it.

I wonder if any of the expensive brands do testers?

Give the RC Kitten a go - you can buy 2kg bags. My dsis' kittens were on Applaws and refused to it eat. I ordered her a bag of the RC and they inhaled it.
As for economy, a 4kg bag is £19. A 3mo kitten is recommended to have 60gms a day. That bag will last just over 2 months - less than £10 a month!

EachandEveryone · 19/09/2017 10:46

Yes Thrive do testers email them.

RubbishMantra · 19/09/2017 13:10

I give them about 75g each, Each. They'd eat more tho given half a chance, and they're not particularly food driven beasties. Continental cat food does appear to be of a much better quality than most British stuff.

The Purizon does look to be tasty from a cat's point of view OP.
Zooplus sell smaller 400g tester packs of that and the others that have been mentioned.

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 19/09/2017 13:12

Applaws dried food is great and supports UT health. We switched to it after a really bad UTI.

Doobigetta · 19/09/2017 17:59

My kitten has happily tucked into jam, lentils, quinoa, tomatoes, hummus and nutella (all without permission, obviously). She can't be arsed with Royal Canin kitten biscuits at all. Not interested.

Of course, we've got 25kg of the bloody stuff.
