What wrong with my Dcat?

Hello I hope someone can advise me. My cat doesn't seem to be quite right and I'm not sure what's wrong with her. She seemed to be retching/coughing quite a lot on Friday, and was off her food, but wasn't being sick or coughing any hairballs. We took her to the vets on Saturday, and she had an anti-emetic and antibiotic injection, which slowed the coughs and seemed to make her a bit more comfortable. On Monday she was almost better. But last night it has returned, though she's still eating well.

Should I take her back to the vets? (Bearing in mind this is a last resort as she used to be a stray so is VERY independently minded and won't put up with being handled). Or is there something I can give her that will help produce what's bothering her?

As your vet has already seen her I would give them a call and ask for advice.

It could still be a furball that is difficult to shift. She may have swallowed something like string, feathers, or any random item which is now in her throat.

Anti emetic will stop the retching but not cure the problem if this is the case. It annoys me that a/bs are given rather than looking for the cause, presumably without doing any tests.

There are different types of cough, you could record it and show the vet.

Could be a blade of grass?

bigbluedustbin · 14/09/2017 01:56

Probably just a difficult hairball or she's eaten something stringy like grass and it's got caught and is bothering her. It's probably worth taking her back to the vet if it continues for too long -- one of mine had this and the retching caused a minor tongue injury deep in her throats so she needed antibiotics to avoid an infection.

Her throat. Not throats. I do not have a multi-throated kitty.

Thanks for getting back to me everyone. I did ring my vet as @thecatneuterer suggested, and they suggested I leave it til the weekend and maybe try a cat laxative like Catalax. But then I got home, her breathing was fine and she just has what sounds like an occasional chesty cough, rather than retching. And eating like a horse I should add. So will wait til my man is home at the weekend to help me deal with that tiny ball of rage.
