Trying to collect cat urine ...anyone find this easy?

in summary .... AARRRGGGHHHHH!

So Grumpy old cat is 19, arthritis, hyperthyroidism, but generally very well for a senior-pus.

last night he had some blood in his urine, so off to the vets this morning.
Vet thinks it is just cystitis, but he was dehydrated and his bladder was empty, so I have been given this special cat litter to try to collect a sample at home.

pee number 1: after we got home, i was explaining to OH how we had to empty tthe litter tray and to put this other stuff in it instead. Whilst having this conversation, GrumpyOldPus immediately went to his litter tray and peed.

pee number 2: GrumpyOldCat NOT impressed with this new litter. after walking and in out of his tray 10 times..... he proceeds to pee on our shoe rack.

pee number 3: i'm going to have to just follow GrumpyOldCat round the house with a container (benny hill style) to try to catch it aren't i ?

The only good news, is that there is no evidence of any more blood in the urine.

anyone want a 19yr bastardcat Smile ? (clearly a light hearted joke ... btw...)

any tips, or similar stories to make me feel better would be appreciated .

I had to try that too. ShotsCat also refused point blank. She even held it in for a day when I shut her in the house.

Relented, she dashed outside.

Tried shutting her in again on a Sunday, she waited till I had gone to work on Monday, then weed on the special granules, so by the time I got him it was old and not viable to test.

Gave up for good.

This is no help to you...

GrumpyOldCatsNurse · 13/09/2017 13:06

ha thanks !
Do any cats like this stuff then?

I do think he is on the mend regardless... so i'm not too worried, as long as he drinks more today.

I didn't use the special litter, just waited til my cat went to the tray to pee, then lifted up her tail a bit and held a shallow container under her rear! But she was very laid-back.

viques · 13/09/2017 13:17

My cats were so pathetically grateful to be allowed to use a tray instead of being bundled out in the great outdoors that they obliged within minutes with the white granules. sorry, unhelpful post!

GrumpyOldCatsNurse · 13/09/2017 13:24

Gerund I think i might try that.....

I got a bag of the small, smooth pebbles that you use in fish tanks. Pour boiling water over them, dry with kitchen towels and put in a new litter tray or a very, very well washed one.

thecatneuterer · 13/09/2017 13:26

That made me laugh. Not helpful, sorry.

I never have a problem. I don't even bother with the special litter. I just shut the relevant cat in a room with a completely empty tray and they always use it.

GrumpyOldCatsNurse · 13/09/2017 13:33

catneuterer there was much laughing and swearing earlier ! He's a loveable git really.

So GrumpyOldCat now fast asleep.

Our new plan is to keep the downstairs litter tray with the "special" litter downstairs.
I'll refill the upstairs litter tray with his normal litter and have a container (bottom cut of a plastic drinks bottle) on stand by.

the vets shut at 7pm...... so this is the mission.

SO much easier !

OH is now off to deliver the sample to the vet Smile

(apologies for all the exclamation marks)

Hurrah! Well done :)

juneybean · 13/09/2017 17:01

Argh I remember this nightmare...then I wasn't sure if the right cat had peed on it!!

ShotsFired · 13/09/2017 17:17

Pleased for you but jealous that it worked. If I tried that I'd be in hospital with severe lacerations. I was left bleeding around my neck after I took ShotsCat for her annual jabs and she managed to end up literally on my head.

GrumpyOldCatsNurse · 13/09/2017 17:57

so vet quite happy with the sample, no sign of glucose/diabetes or kidney problems, but a few red blood cells, so looks like an infection so he will now have a course of antibiotics. Luckily, GrumpyOldCat is very good at taking pills....

he is due a full blood test Friday. That is another battle ! first blood test he had, the vet lost more blood than the cat.

Thanks for your stories and tips !

Shotsfired not sure if i feel more sorry for you or ShotsCat !

juneybean luckily GrumpyOldCat is a singleton, but i can imagine how it would be with more than one.

The empty tray idea is really good.

I taught ours it is ok to wee in the bath but sometimes he thinks this means on the outside of the bath too. Which is not so good.
