What could be wrong?

His Highness just isn't himself at the moment. Something seems off but I'm just not sure what.

He's moving quite slowly, lethargically, almost a tiny bit unsteadily. I thought he had hurt one of his back legs at first. He usually bounds down the stairs in the morning but is taking them one at a time now. He hasn't gone outside today, has used his litter tray instead (normal bowel movements), because he seems to find the cat flap a bit awkward. He's sleeping lots (that's not particularly unusual) and instead of his full volume bellowing miaow he gives a pathetic little mewl every now and again. He's been like this since about Saturday but this is the first day he hasn't gone out.

I've poked and prodded all over. He doesn't seem to be in any pain, he hasn't responded unusually (e.g. with a miaow, swipe or bite) when I've touched any part of his body. I can't feel any lumps or bumps or unusual hardness or softness, there's no swelling or wounds anywhere. His eyes, nose, mouth and ears are all bright and clear. He's eating normally.

He's 3. Do you think he's just a bit under the weather? Should I take him to the vet? I'm not sure what I'd say - "He's too slow" doesn't seem like a good enough reason!

He heard me taking photos and got up to admonish me

I'd take him to a vet, he doesn't sound right does he?.

TheSpottedZebra · 12/09/2017 15:57

How is he now?

YetAnotherSpartacus · 12/09/2017 16:04

Please take him to the vet. Cats are so good at disguising illness and your's ... isn't, which suggests that something might be wrong that maybe only a vet could find through blood tests or something?

LemonRedwood · 12/09/2017 19:17

Just got back from the vet. He was hiding a nice little abscess just under left collarbone. It burst as he was getting in the basket to go! He's probably been fighting again - it was his tail last time. I think he just rolls over and let's the other cat sink their teeth in.

He's had an injection and he'll be happy for the next few day as I'll be hiding the antibiotics in tuna.

I'm kicking myself for missing it and letting it go for a few days, but the be fair, looking back at the photos from yesterday there is absolutely nothing there whereas this afternoon in was obvious and bald.

No
Kicking.
Stop that!
Cats are a nightmare for hiding illness and injury. Hope he feels better soon.

TheSpottedZebra · 12/09/2017 20:28

Poor cat and poor you - hope you're both feeling better soon.
They are buggers for hiding injuries, and abscesses go from 0-60 so, so quickly.

LemonRedwood · 12/09/2017 21:55

Thanks everyone. I'm glad he's happier now and that it was a simple thing really. I'd built up in my head much more sinister reasons for him not being 100%!
