Best flea product

Have just discovered 2 fleas on our 1 train old cat. He's made a friend/enemy of another cat and they spend hours with each other so I'm presuming that's where the critters are from. I didn't see any last time I checked him the other day so he's only just caught them. Hardly any black specks in his fur either.

What's the best flea product and where can I get it? (Tomorrow!)

Do I need to spray the house and what with?

Thanks 😀

Is he registered at a vets? Take him along and ask for a prescription for their recommended product and order it online. .
Just done this and cost me 50% of the vets price!!

Advocate from the vet for the cat and Indorex for the house.

poohbear123 · 10/09/2017 17:46

I never have a problem from our two cats as long as we're regularly applying Advocate spot-on (from the vets). If any fleas have infested the house, once you're treating the cat he should act as a walking flea killer as they'll hop onto him to feed, so the problem should resolve itself in a few weeks. If you're finding lots though you might want to blitz the house with Indorex spray, wash all sheets etc...

Well worth regular treatment to prevent problems. Good luck!

Go to the vets. I've just spent a summer using frontline and similar, which made the cats feel unwell and didn't touch the fleas. Vet used some new spot on product which lasts 12 weeks. He said not to bother treating house, as this spot on should also get rid of any infestation (fleas will hop onto cats and die.) After that am going to opt for preventative injections.

Indorex for the house. It's expensive but works very well.

OrangeFurryCat · 10/09/2017 17:50

Daft question given that no one here knows my vets but do you reckon I'll just be able to ring them for a prescription? I have a bloody awful day tomorrow and could really do without having to go to the vet.

Indorex spray is on amazon - is that safe for cats? I know there's some brands/chemicals not safe.

Not that I've seen any fleas in the house tbh only the 2 I found on the cat.

Thanks for the help!

If you visit your vets regularly about the cat then they should prescribe it over the phone, but they do need to have checked the weight to get the dosage right.

Nomoresunshine · 10/09/2017 18:33

As long as registered they will prescribe. Though for a repeat my vet wants to see them. .

Hunkle · 10/09/2017 18:36

Pets at home does a vet plan - £10 a month for cats. Thats flea, worm, health checks and annual jabs for 12 months.

OrangeFurryCat · 10/09/2017 20:43

Well he's registered but hasn't been seen since neutering in March. Looks like a trip there squeezed into a busy day 🙄Thanks for the advice, much appreciated!

Yep, you'll have to take him in to be weighed. But you don't need to see the vet though (or you don't at mine) - the scale is in reception so it's very quick

dementedpixie · 10/09/2017 20:48

I have bought advocate from the vets several times without taking the cats. Have you not been treating your cat monthly as advised?

dementedpixie · 10/09/2017 20:49

I weighed mine by standing on my electric bathroom scales with and without the cat

OrangeFurryCat · 10/09/2017 20:52

No I haven't been treating him because the vet didn't advise me to? I assumed that you didn't need to treat until there was evidence, a bit like headlice I suppose.

Yes I'll weigh him on the bathroom scales, he's quite amenable to things like that!

Hunkle · 10/09/2017 20:56

The £10 a month plan I have gives me the monthly flea treatment, & then every 3 months I get the worm treatment.

I just pop in to collect it.

So 16 treatments in 1 year (plus jabs) for £10 a month.

dementedpixie · 10/09/2017 21:11

You're supposed to flea treat monthly and worm every 3 months. Best to prevent an infestation than try to rid your house of them

OrangeFurryCat · 10/09/2017 21:17

I will be from now on! The £10 thing sounds good Hunkle but I'm not sure we are near a Pets at Home.

Your vet may have some sort of scheme but I just buy stuff as I need it
