Hello, our 15 week old kitten has got very handy with teeth and claws. He is well handled from an early age, was with mum until 10 weeks and has lots of toys, climbing frame etc but in the past week or so is very boisterous and play bites alot and grabs with his claws. This isn't encouraged and we stop interacting immediately with him as soon as he does it
He is very affectionate and loves strokes and cuddles but I am actually getting quite scared of picking him up and he is getting worse not better ! Help... thank you !

Have you got a kickaroo toy they are for biting, scratching and kicking. Sadly that's how kittens play with their litter mates and that is now you, or so they think. When they do it to me I put them down and give them the kickaroo or get a toy that's in a pole and play with them so they can jump kick and bite that. That's why I always say one kitten is better than two

Thank you will look at those ! I've got fishing rod toys in every room for distraction. I think you are right about 2 kittens but we already have a cat and thought 3 would be too many. In retrospect it may have been ok !!

Kittens can be very free with teeth and claws, I fear. A bit of age and his neutering should help.

He'll grow out of it I promise!

He's just playing and hasn't learned yet to play softly.

Oh...and honestly, it actually doesn't hurt as much if you just let it happen as it does if you try and pull away with kitten claws still attached.

I play fought with all my kittens, I didn't discourage them from biting and clawing me at all as it's just their natural play instinct. They still grew out of it...I can't remember exactly when but my latest cats have just turned one and it's been a long time since they stopped play fighting with me apart from when I actively encourage it.

Cats don't really respond/learn in the same way that dogs do so I personally don't think that stopping interacting with him will teach him anything. It's simply a kitten-ish phase they all go through and come out of.

I'm not sure it's possible to have a kitten without looking like you have been self harming for the first few months!

Kittens do have very sharp teeth and claws and yes those Kickeroo toys are great for them to get their teeth and claws into.
I'm sure he will grow out of it.

Just ordered kickaroo toy ! Can any one suggest other toys that have been good. I think until he can go out he is going to need lots of entertaining. He is a very very physical little chap !

I have two, just turned one (had them for a couple of months) and they really don't seem to be growing out of biting, and chewing everything they can get their teeth on - especially electrical cables, which is obviously worrying. What do you do if they don't grow out of it? previous cats have not had this particular habit.....

cherrycola2004 · 08/09/2017 19:53

Also they bite a lot when teething if you have another cat the kitten may start to play fight with it! Small cuddly toys covered in cat nip spray are good too.

Desert girl try bitter Apple spray on the wires they usually hate that!
