How much does thyroid medication cost?

We have taken in a cat that belonged to a woman three doors up. She was refusing to let him in the house as he was soiling (not doing it in our house).

CPL have scanned him and he was registered to someone in 2006 (he is 13 years old now) and he has had at least four owners we know of. He has now ended up with us, and we will offer him a home for life.

So he's been to the vet this morning because of his eating and vet has booked him in for bloods on Thursday morning. His heart rate was 180 per minute which is really high.

Looks very likely to be thyroid so now worrying about the cost. We are on a low income but not low enough to qualify for PDSA help. Any ideas how much this will cost us please?

I don't know the cost but your vet could give you a prescription (they will charge for this) and you could buy it online. We do this with insulin for our cat and it saves quite a bit.

Thanks, I will look into that.

Hi ya. My cat was on thyroid tablets before we eventually lost her to heart failure (she was very old so don't worry) the meds were about £26 for 30days but you need to pay for regular blood tests to start with whilst they settle the dosage. Then the blood tests are less frequent. Price has come down a lot since she first went on it, plus I moved to a much cheaper chain vets (vets 4 pets). A colleague buys the liquid version of the meds online and it's fairly cheap.

Hope you get it sorted

I controlled my cats thyroid problem with a special diet . I refused to give him a tablet ( apparently it's big ) everyday because it would have caused us both distress . He was 16 ! But the food helped him make it to 19! .. it's not cheap but it's certainly kinder than giving them tablets daily and probably cheaper too.

jessie We have five cats and putting one cat on a special diet while restricting any of the cats movements would be absolutely impossible!

Our boy is 13 and his heart rate was really high when I took him in yesterday. Getting his bloods done tomorrow (Cats Protection are very kindly footing the bills for the bloods over the next 3 to 4 months as we are effectively taking in a homeless cat) so fingers crossed we can get him sorted asap. The vet said the tablet was pretty small and as I've already wormed Felix without mishap I am hopeful that one tablet a day will be feasible.

Poor boy is just relentlessly crying for food at the moment and I do feel bad that I can't just magically fix him. He's just had his second dinner (because he's not allowed breakfast in the morning) and is now asleep on an A4 piece of cardboard at my feet! (next to a cat bed which he refuses to use).

Yes , I had two when he was alive and we had to feed him on his own . It was a pain to be honest.

Poor Felix is back from the vet with his neck partially shaved. He looks a bit sorry for himself and was howling for food when we got home!

Should get the results today and then start him on medication. Vet also mentioned the possibility of surgery or radiation therapy (which will cure it but costs £2k).

At the moment we will just start him on the tablets and see how it goes.

Ah bless him. Glad he's sorted. We were also advised we could have surgery but she was 15 so I didn't think it was worth the investment for the time she prob had left with us, when meds would work as well and be cheaper.

Found she took to tablets after a while ok, but if I ever struggled I'd push one down into a soft treat (those strips of soft meat you can get in foil packets in Aldi / pets at home etc worked perfectly as the tablets were only contraceptive pill sized). I have a nearly full bottle left if he's on Felimazole 2.5mg - happy to post them to you if you want to msg me.

Weirdly his T4 results are normal!

He is now booked in for full bloods on Monday to check everything else. Both vets and I are baffled. He shows every symptom of thyroid.

Vet said if they all come back normal they will consider putting him on the drugs for a month to see if that brings his heart rate and appetite down a bit. Thank you for your offer Katkincake that's really kind of you! If that's what they put him on I will message you.
