Shitting shit. Dd allergic to new cat.

We picked up our beautiful new girl yesterday and we're all in love with her.

We knew dd had allergies as a toddler but no sign of them for years. She has had sleepovers with cats next to her head, and has just got back from a week at granny's with 3 cats in the house. No sign of any symptoms.

Last night her eyes puffed up really badly after a 10 minute cuddle. They went down again with antihistamines but I really don't want her to be ill every time she's been away for a few days.

How long should we give it to see if she adjusts?

Shitting shit. Dd allergic to new cat.

You could try using PetalCleanse on the cat and see if it helps.

abbsisspartacus · 03/09/2017 09:16

It might be ok after awhile

MrsSchadenfreude · 03/09/2017 09:17

Petal Cleanse really helped DD1.Smile

QOD · 03/09/2017 09:17

My dd just takes zirtec when it flares up. She's mostly fine with ours but desensitised over time really

SavoyCabbage · 03/09/2017 09:21

My dd is really, really allergic to one of our friends cats and very slightly allergic to some other cats. She's been looking after our neighbours cat in the holiday. All fine. But she can't go to this friends house at all now and when they come to ours they all change their clothes first and she still sneezes.

TheDonald · 03/09/2017 09:22

Thanks. I'm ordering it now.

We've decided we can ride out itchy eyes but any sign of asthma getting worse and we'll have to rethink.

DS had a reaction when we first got our kittens earlier this year. I got some non-prescription eye drops which worked well and better than taking oral anti-h which can make you drowsy. He stoped reacting after a few weeks - it was just an adjustment from going from no cats around to cats all the time. He's fine now.

I sympathise with you - DS also had asthma as an infant (not recently) and I was so worried at the time that I'd put him in danger by getting cats and that we'd have to give that kittens away which would have been upsetting for all of us, particularly the DC. I hope it works out for you.

ememem84 · 03/09/2017 09:29

What a beauty! What breed is she?

When we got catface dh was sniffly and red eyed for a week or so. He's fine now. Maybe it's just a change in environment?

either that or dh has been taking piraton religiously every day for the past year

shouldwestayorshouldwego · 03/09/2017 09:39

One of my dc reacts to the cat flea treatment. Eyes puff up. Only happens at treatment time. For a while we gave the cats tablets, now I treat and chuck them outside and no cuddles for 24hrs. Is it possible that the cat was treated just before you got her?

TheDonald · 03/09/2017 09:47

Yes she was treated. That could be it.

She's 10 months. Was found as a stray last Tuesday, flea and worm treatments on Wednesday and neutered and chipped on Thursday. She's got the cone of shame on most of the time so wondered if that might affect her grooming too.

She hasn't had a good week!

Obviously the cat can't go out so I guess it is piriton and avoid for the moment. Dd is only affected for the first few days but might be worth seeing if it calms down and then comes back next month. Our two vary considerably in terms of how much hair they shed. One you just need to look at and you are covered in fur, the other one rarely sheds hair- it matts and has to be groomed out so maybe other cats are different to this one.

TheDonald · 03/09/2017 10:08

Yes I'd be very sad to rehome her, but she's 15 now and quite capable of looking after herself Grin

OP...I've had cats all my life, and when we got our latest kitten I hadn't had a cat for a year and had a small reaction, though hadn't thought of the flea treatment.

I hope she gets on well with the cat form now on

Fluffycloudland77 · 03/09/2017 11:16
Grin

I hope she gets used to her.

Dh got used to ours after a few weeks. He blames the cat for his asthma but he smoked for over 30years, has had radiotherapy on his chest & practically everyone in his family uses an inhaler. Plus he was on ventolin when I met him.

Also, nothing is ever the cats fault in my eyes.

ememem84 · 03/09/2017 12:19

fluffy nor me. Cats can do no wrong in my eyes.

Want2beme · 03/09/2017 13:08

I've had cats for many years and am allergic to their fur. When I cuddle them I CANNOT then touch my face or my eyes stream and get very puffy. I am very careful so it doesn't happen often. If your DD keeps her distance, not ideal I know, but it might help. Good luck.
