Fleas!

Can anyone please advise me on what flea products work best a) on their cat and b) in their home. My cat is generally quite a loner and we have not had a flea problem for a very long time. Looking on the internet for advice it all seems to be advertising and not much recommendation of products that actually work. I have used 'Frontline' on the cat before, is it still the best? Thanks.

Advocate off the vet for the cat, indorex for the house. You can buy that in some pharmacies.

Doowappydoo · 02/09/2017 12:55

The best stuff comes from the vet advocat worked well for us but don't think you can buy from shop. I don't rate Frontline

dementedpixie · 02/09/2017 12:56

Frontline isn't supposed to be any good. I use advocate from the vet. Haven't had to treat the house

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 02/09/2017 12:57

Advocate from the vet for your cat and Indorex for the house. Also use a flea comb.

Vinorosso74 · 02/09/2017 13:44

Advocate or Stronghold from the vet. We used Stronghold for years with no fleas but recently switched to Advocate due to Vinocat's weight fluctuating around the minimum for the Stronghold.

My favorite is now bravecto a prescription only spot on from vets. Last three months then Indorexx or Acclaim in the house. Don't forget a wormer as the fleas carry the tapeworm larvae so if the cat has fleas it will have worms.

Wolfiefan · 02/09/2017 13:50

Frontline is rubbish.
We use Advocate. Never anything over the counter. Indorex is good but have never needed to treat the house

elephantoverthehill · 02/09/2017 14:26

Thanks all, I guess a trip to the vet then is in order. Next problem will be getting elephant cat into the carrier. Ho hum!

You don't need to take the cat to the vet to buy a flea treatment

elephantoverthehill · 02/09/2017 14:43

Ooh thanks for that advice demented.

Do you have an idea of their weight as the spot on is weight based e.g. under 4kg would get a different dose to a cat over 4kg. I weighed mine using our digital bathroom scales - weigh with the cat and weigh without the cat to get a rough idea

Wolfiefan · 02/09/2017 14:55

You do need a prescription to buy most effective flea treatments. No vet will issue a prescription without seeing the animal.

FrJohnnyHellzapoppin · 02/09/2017 15:00

Another vote for bravecto here, Frontline stopped working, bravecto killed off fleas rapidly (needs renewing regularly and our cat starts scratching within a week of renewal date)

elephantoverthehill · 02/09/2017 15:01

I guess I will just have to ring on Monday. Damn I go back work next week. I wish had become more apparent earlier in the holidays then I would have been able to be much more on it.

Well mine does! I have bought it several times without having the cats with me. I've also bought wormer without them

Wolfiefan · 02/09/2017 15:25

I wouldn't use Bravecto. If your cats are registered with the vets and they see them regularly enough to know weights and general health then vets will issue medication. They can't issue medication for a cat they haven't seen in ages.
