Cat heaving and hiding

Hi all, just after some advice as I'm not sure what to do.

My lovely cat seems a bit unwell. He's been heaving as if he's going to be sick all evening. He was eventually a little bit sick before, but not much, it was just liquid.

He's been heaving all evening, and now is hiding under the bath and won't come out for anything. When I try to move him he just goes stiff and won't move. I'm nearly 35 weeks pregnant so struggling to get in any sort of bendy position to get him out too. I tried to tempt him with some food but he didn't even sniff it. He's been there for about half an hour now.

He last ate at about 6pm and has had a wee and a poo in his litter tray this evening.

He's done this before but usually vomits some grass or a hairball up quite quickly.

I'm just a bit worried about him and I don't want him to be uncomfortable or in pain Sad

Oh I should add, he's not and old cat, he's around 3 years old

He still wont come out from under the bath, he's gone as far to the back as possible Sad

I'd suggest vet. Old girl was a vomiting, fur ball type cat, but got one stuck and had to have it surgically removed. It was massive, from the scan, vet though it was a tumour, but I was handed it in a bag post operative and it turned out to be a fur ball the size of a fist, interlaced with bits of grass!

The hiding is very worrying. They tend to do that when they think they are dying.

Firstly make sure he can't get out. Could it be some sort of poisoning? Does he go out? Have you had any lilies in the house?

I'd be inclined to get him to an emergency vet.

BumblingBee89 · 01/09/2017 22:28

Oh no Sad I was worried it could be a vet job, I would have expected it to work it's way out by now.

Would you suggest taking him now as an emergency or in the morning? I'd need to somehow get him out from under the bath and I just don't know how Sad

Thank you for replying!

That's what worried me about the hiding too. Oh gosh. I need to get him out then somehow.

He does go outside but only when we let him out through the window, we don't have a cat flap or anything. No lillies in the house or anything. Thank you

It always happens at the worst times doesn't it.

I would be inclined to take him now. It could also be something stuck in the throat, like a bone. That would also need immediate attention.

Do you have insurance? Emergency vets cost a bomb. If you live alone and can't get him out from under the bath do you perhaps have a neighbour who might help?

Vinorosso74 · 01/09/2017 22:42

I would recommend calling the emergency vets. They can advise what to do and whether to bring him in etc.
Would some smelly food like tuna or sardines entice him out or even Dreamies? I hope someone can help you get him out as no it's not easy crawling around at 35 weeks pregnant. Let us know how he is.

thecatneuterer · 01/09/2017 22:44

I agree with Vinorosso. Call the vets. Describe the symptoms and let them make the call on how long it can wait.

Thank you so much everyone for your replies. My husband is away this weekend otherwise I would have sent him under there to get him for sure!

He is out now!! He came out of his own accord and is now sitting in his favourite chair looking quite happy. He also let me cuddle him and flopped down and seemed relaxed.

I think he's coughed something up under the bath but I can't quite see! I'm going to sit up with him for a bit and keep an eye on him, if.he doesn't seem himself I will call the emergency vet

Thank you so much everyone!

Random tip for trying to see things (sick?) in awkward places: take a photo with the flash on and then zoom in. Just to save you squeezing under the bath. I do hope he's alright

Vinorosso74 · 01/09/2017 23:13

Hopefully he just ate something he needed to bring up!
Do keep an eye on him, any concerns call the emergency vet. Paws crossed he's ok and your husband can clear up whatever is under the bath....
I have a 14yo cat and 7yo DD and the cat causes me more worry!

My cat was doing this exact thing a few days ago, I left her overnight in the hope that she would vomit whatever it was up. She seemed a lot better but still not herself the following morning so I did take her to the vets. He thoroughly checked her over, stomach, bones, mouth, throat etc. He said cats are unlikely to eat anything they shouldn't but it may just have been a hairball that was taking its time to come out, or she may have been in a fight or fallen awkwardly. So he gave her some antibiotics and anti inflammatory and by the next morning she was 100% again. Little pest!! Scared the life out of me when I googled 'hairballs'. Glad your little pest is better too!! They are a worry like a pp said!
