Harry's kidney results

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 31/08/2017 11:49

I've just spoken to the vet and his levels have risen slightly but she's not too worried at the moment. Can someone who knows more about this put it into context for me as I'm trying to avoid googling?

Creatinine
May 2017 - 218
Aug 2017 - 237

Urea
May 2017 - 11.9
Aug 2017 - 15.1

Protein in urine
May 2017 - 0.1
Next urine test due October 2017

Thanks in advance

I'm no help - but how is Harry?

Lonecatwithkitten · 01/09/2017 12:32

There is a new test SDMA that is much more sensitive and picks up problems much earlier, wit those results I would be doing that. SDMA is a much better indicator of kidney function than creatinine which is affected by muscle mass.

Thanks Lone, I'll mention it to the vet next time we're in. What does the test involve? When you say 'with those results' is that because they are bad? (Sorry, I panic when it come to Harry!)

Spartacus, he's fine thanks. He's eating, running around and generally being his 'normal' self!

He's beautiful. I hope that you get some answers re his tests.

Creatinine is slightly raised, but difficult to interpret without knowing his body condition score. SDMA will give you a much more accurate idea about kidney function.

Lonecatwithkitten · 01/09/2017 18:20

SDMA is just a blood test sent to the Idexx lab.

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 01/09/2017 21:14

Thanks Lone. The vet isn't in a hurry to do another blood test, she's going to do a urine test in a couple of months (oh joy, katkor again!) to check his protein levels. When she does mention the blood test I'll ask about SDMA.

At the moment she's happy for him to carry on with his normal food and Ipakitine and monitor him. He's got no obvious signs at the moment so hopefully that'll continue. At the end of the day it's about quality of life, not quantity.
