Rehome a cat

My DS has now been confirmed as allergic to cats so I guess we have to rehome DCat 😰

This is so heartbreaking. I feel horrible, but equally I feel horrible for causing my son to have suffered from his allergies for so long.

How do I even go about it??

It's bloody difficult. All rescue centres are completely full. You may have more luck if you can hang on until after kitten season (so November ish) as then the pressure will be off rescues slightly and there is more chance of homing adults.

Try www.catchat.org to find all the rescues in your area and get in touch with them all.

I've just written a long post and lost it.
So sorry.
Perhaps if you give a vague idea
Of where you are people can suggest places. No friends or family who could
Take cat?
Not saying you shouldn't rehome but I react to one of mine. Cats out of bedrooms. Wash hands after touching. Damp dust. Try petal cleanse? Throws can be washed but generally fewer soft furnishings the better. May help until you can sort something?

Ah yes. Petal Cleanse is supposed to work wonders in suppressing allergens

Wolfiefan · 30/08/2017 23:39

I'm allergic to one of two sisters. As long as I wash my hands and keep her away from my face it is manageable. If she sits on my pillow it's horrid.
But I am not rehomjng one sister. I couldn't. They stay. I take anti histamine! Blush

We are all allergic at different levels here but we love our boy cat so much. We use petal cleanse on cats coat once a week and we have a spray to clean the air in the evenings. We keep the house well aired and cat is not allowed in bedrooms. We all wash hands religiously after being with him - dd learned this the hard way after touching her eye before washing them.

So it is possible to keep the allergens down, but if your ds is really suffering then I'd recommend a rescue where they will make sure he goes to a good home.

Thank you everyone..

I'm in London and I have contacted a few rehome places but haven't gone through as I feel heartbroken 😭 we are keeping DS away from DCat for now but we have a small flat and I feel bad for DCat as he is indoors only and I keep locking him away in the living room. I feel like maybe he will have a better life with someone else as I keep trying to avoid him.

None of our family or friends can take him sadly.

Ooh I may try petal cleanse.. never heard of that before!

It must be so stressful. My allergy to the tortie terror seems to be getting better but I know they can also get worse. Sad
If it's any help we got our first cats from Katz castle cobham. Many many years ago.

If you Google Cherry Tree Rescue in Welwyn (depending on which side of London you are) they have been very good at helping to rehome

thecatneuterer · 02/09/2017 01:28

He won't have a better life with someone else as it will be so very, very difficult to find him another home. If it gets a place in a rescue (which until winter is very unlikely anyway - and even then will be a struggle), then he could well end up spending six months or more in a cage waiting to be chosen from the hundreds of cats in each rescue needing homes.

If there is any way at all you can keep him then that would be best for him. And yes, do try Petal Cleanse.
