Hello - this is my first time posting in the litter tray.

My beautiful, wonderful, loyal girl is poorly.

She is 17/18 years old and on Monday she lost the use of her back legs and hasn't eaten anything much since Sunday morning. She is quite skinny anyway which I put down to her age.

We took her to the vet yesterday and he said that she has damaged her spine and he would recommend she is put to sleep. He touch her spine and she cried. There is no movement in her tail.

We took her home and she has been laying in her favourite spot. She can't move around but seems very happy and is always purring and enjoying strokes. She has been drinking a little water and today had a small amount of food (maybe a tea spoon).

I don't know what to do. The vet said he thinks if we don't have her put to sleep she only has days left. But to me she seems happy and relaxed and not showing any sign of pain. But I don't want to cause her unnecessary distress or her starving to death but she seems so happy and content.

I am devastated and I just don't know what the best thing to do for her is. Any advice would be so greatly appreciated.

You poor love. You know she's not going to get better from this. Unfortunately cats are very good at hiding pain as well. How is she managing to go to the toilet? This is the part of being owned by cats which is so painful and hard for us cat slaves but it really would be the best thing to have her put to sleep. The vet could come to house to do it and she would slip away in her favourite spot. 18 - what an amazing age to get to as well!

I think it's time. Cats purr when they are in pain as well as being happy.
She has had a good life and you are to be congratulated on keeping her for such a good age. I think you know the time has come to let her go x.

Oh I'm sorry OP, but I'm afraid I agree with PP's. I think it would be kindest to have her PTS so she's not suffering anymore.

Cats mask their pain well, and purring is often a sign of pain (they purr to comfort themselves as well as when they're happy) - that combined with her crying when her spine was touched tells me she must be in a LOT of pain.

You poor thing. I'm sorry Flowers

Thank you everyone. Thank you so much for your kind words.

It just feels like such a hard decision to make. My DP said he can make the decision for me.

She seems happy. But I know she can't walk and it's not fair.

She has only been for two wees since Monday. Once I put her in the litter tray and the second one she did on her blanket. She did a teeny poo on the floor yesterday.

It's heartbreaking. I can't imagine life without her.

So sorry, but it is time to let her go Flowers

I'm so sorry but agree with all the comments above. For her sake it's time.

DudeHatesHisCarryOut · 30/08/2017 23:00

It's time.

Ring the vet in the morning and ask him to come to your home, rather than put Puss through another trip. Then she can die at home, surrounded by those she loves. What better way to go is there?

isadorable · 30/08/2017 23:09

I'm sorry but you have to do what is the kindest thing for her. I've done it recently so I know it is very sad but you can't imagine leaving her suffering i'm sure.

It's an awful time sushiwushi. I had to have my lovely 20 year old boy PTS a few weeks back and it broke my heart. It's never an easy thing to do, but it sounds like she's very poorly. We always want to hold on to them, and not be put in the position of deciding what's best. Is her pain being managed? Your vet will help you do what's best. Thinking of youFlowers

My girl went to sleep today. I miss her so much. How do you get through it? I feel like a part of me is missing.

Sorry for your loss. It is so hard but you did the best thing for your beloved cat. No more pain for her.

I hope the good memories of the love you shared give you some comfort.

sushiwushi · 01/09/2017 23:00

Thank you Drama. I know it was the best thing for her. But it is still so hard when she has been there with me for so long.
