I think we've been adopted ...

Friday night , getting the washing in , I hear some plaintive meowing going on , and out pops a cat from the hedge . He stayed there until it got dark , and then still stayed there , so because I'm a great big softy , we put a box with a duvet in , and a bit of chopped ham and water out , and he devoured the lot . He's been there ever since . We've taken him to cats protection, they've scanned him but no chip , checked the villages and the towns and tinternet for lost cat notices , checked with all the neighbours , and nothing . I can't think what else to do , so he's here to stay , isn't he ? If we do keep him , not having had a cat before , what do we need to do ? We're going to take him to the vets for a checkup because he has a small wound on his leg , but what else other than that ?

Well, pics. Obviously.

Litter tray? Fuss. Fleas. Food. Proper age appropriate cat food, ham contains a lot of salt. Water. Pet insurance.

plominoagain · 30/08/2017 12:40

We've got him some pouches since the following morning and some biscuit , which he's devouring and made him up a bed in the kids old playhouse and he's happy as Larry bless him ! And he looks like this

I think we've been adopted ...

Do you feel ready to take him on? Have the money to pay for treatments, insurance and cat bits etc?

plominoagain · 30/08/2017 12:43

We haven't let him in the house yet because we've actually got dogs , but we're now planning a phased introduction so no one gets too stressed . He's seen them and they've seen him , and so far so good , but only outside and not on their turf as it were .

He's gorgeous! Vet checkup is a good idea. Check he's been neutered, flea and worm him. Will he be staying outside?

LivingInMidnight · 30/08/2017 12:46

I just read properly and you're phasing him in. Litter tray, toys, something to scratch and somewhere to hide, high up.

YetAnotherSpartacus · 30/08/2017 13:50

And explain to the dogs that their new boss has arrived.

Congrats - he's beautiful!

cozietoesie · 30/08/2017 13:56

He looks like Master of the House already. Grin

LivingInMidnight · 30/08/2017 14:05

He certainty has a very determined look in his eye Grin

cozietoesie · 30/08/2017 14:15

I doubt he's been neutered.

plominoagain · 30/08/2017 14:50

Cats protection say he's neutered , so vets check is tomorrow !

EachandEveryone · 30/08/2017 14:54

Why would you bother neutering but not chipping? He's gorgeous. Dies he let you stroke him?

cozietoesie · 30/08/2017 14:59

Newboy has been neutered but not chipped. Smile

EachandEveryone · 30/08/2017 15:07

I've never thought about it really as my vet does it for free at the same time.

plominoagain · 30/08/2017 20:33

He was very wary at first , but he's quite happy around us now and has taken to sitting on DDs lap like he's always been there ! He's been christened Duster after his cobweb festooning antics behind the piano Grin

He's a dude! Hope he stays with you. You sound like you will be a very good slave to him. When he eventually takes over the household, he'll require a cat tower, cat tunnel, scratch post and plenty of toys!

AllToadsLeadToHome · 31/08/2017 01:17

Just a thought, he may have an owner who has gone on holiday and he is looking for company. Our neighbour has 2 cats, one stays close to home at all times, the other will stay in our garden if we are around, come into the house, help himself to food if it is left out and settle down on our cat bed. He just likes company. It got to the stage where I was phoning them to tell them to call him home because he wouldn't go.

However, if you have acquired a new cat, please get him chipped so that he is registered to you. If posters go up in a couple of weeks you will have a heartbreaking decision to make so maybe wait a while in case you inadvertently steal him.

Weedsnseeds1 · 31/08/2017 23:59

Oooh, he looks a lovely big boy!
Catnip, scratching post ( for when he takes over the house) and a few toys.
How old do you think he is?

plominoagain · 01/09/2017 01:23

Vet thinks he's about a year old . Took him to the vets yesterday , checked him again with their scanners for a chip , still nothing , then she had a look at his wound on his thigh and said he had an abscess . Which she then gave a good squeeze , which he wasn't keen on , but he let her , and then cuddled into me while she gave him an antibiotics jab.

Then we came home and had breakfast, after which he spent the morning lounging on the patio .. and the DH who apparently doesn't like cats is drawing up plans for a luxury cat house conversion for the garden , and looking at cat beds to go along side the dog beds in front of the woodburner .

Congrats on the new cat...

EachandEveryone · 01/09/2017 18:59

How fantastic. Are you keeping him indoors tonight? What's his name?

Fluffycloudland77 · 01/09/2017 19:10

Yes, your dhs actions sound just like someone who dislikes cats Grin

TopBitchoftheWitches · 01/09/2017 19:11

Can I ask why you fed him straight away?

I'm not looking for an argument at all but personally I would only feed another cat if it had been hanging around for a few days.

cozietoesie · 01/09/2017 19:14

Oh Yes. DH sounds really anti-cat! Grin
