Cat broken pelvis ☹️

Hi, really sad and concerned, just wondered if anyone has any experience of their cat's recovery from a broken pelvis, particularly with reference to how long it took for them to have bladder control? Our beautiful cat was hit by a car yesterday, she has a broken pelvis and hasn't managed to wee all day. Vets are keeping her in for another 24 hours, they have said that she's comfortable and painkillers are working well, but they have also indicated that if she hasn't managed to wee on her own by then, it would mean that things aren't looking good ☹️ Poor little cat, still can't believe it.

Yes that happened to a cat of mine but it's a long time ago, 30 years or so. She was hit by a car and was in the vets for several weeks. When she came back from the vets we had to contain her in a playpen for weeks to stop her from jumping whilst the bones set. We also had to put liquid paraffin in her food so she could poo easily. As it's so long ago I can't remember how long we kept her like this, several weeks I think. She made a full recovery although walked with a slight limp from thereon. But otherwise she was completely fine.

Also our cat was missing for several days after being hit by the car and was stuck in a shed injured. She got stuck as she couldn't jump. As such she didn't get medical help for quite a while but like I say, she fully recovered.

So sorry to hear about your cat; exactly the same thing happened to ours and he made a full recovery after being found in a neighbour's front garden having been hit by a car. His pelvis was completely shattered.

With regards to the weeing, I don't remember this being a concern but I do remember that he was totally zonked on painkillers and therefore not really eating/drinking or going to the loo because of this. We were told after he had healed that the way it had all fused back together was possibly blocking his colon but it all turned out to be fine.

Keeping everything crossed for you and your cat, look after yourself x

Can she move her tail and hindlegs? One of the things that can happen with a pelvic injury is nerve damage. If the cat doesn't have voluntary control of urination then that's bad news. It can be managed short term by manually expressing the bladder or putting in a urinary catheter but longer term becomes a welfare issue. I hope she is just sore and will urinate by herself soon.

Thanks, I wondered whether that might be the case. When I visited her at the vets earlier, she tried to stand up and it looked like she could definitely move her hind legs to an extent, but her tail does look quite limp at the moment ☹️ Really hoping everything will turn out to be ok when the soreness eases, poor thing.

We think my girl was stood on by a pony. She crawled home unable to move her back legs at all. We rushed her to the vets who diagnosed a broken pelvis and that she would need PTS. I asked for time until I could get there. They agreed to keep her on pain meds until after the weekend They had told me that as she was completely unable to pass urine or poop she needed PTS but when I got there ready to say goodbye they said, "Oh yeah, we forgot to tell you, she went to the toilet"
I'm so glad I never gave the okay.
I had to keep her virtually immobile in a small pet cage for at least 6 weeks. She made a full recovery (though was not happy about the confinement)
