Pet Plan or Tesco pet insurance

This type of question has probably been done to death. Sorry.
I'm trying to decide between Pet Plan and Tesco and can't decide. I've seen some quite bad reviews online for PP which puts me off. Originally I thought that it would definitely be them I would go for.
Or is there someone else I should be looking at? I'm interested in lifetime cover.
The whole pet insurance scam set up is just mind-boggling!
The way it sounds to me is that once you sign up it's better to stick with the same provider (if a claim has been made) rather than the usual shop around for renewal. Seems all a bit permanent and that I need to make the right decision from the off. Or am i completely misunderstanding it?

Tesco. My two have run up vets bills of £10,000 in the space of 3 months. They paid out quickly and no quibble. When I did phone them they were very helpful. I had my renewal letter through yesterday and my premium has only gone up by £15. So I'm happy with that. I looked at pet plan but It was more expensive and am extremely happy with Tesco.

I have the top level cover.

Another vote for Tesco - they're friendly and helpful on the phone and they do take a little while to pay out claims but I've not yet had one refused and I've used them quite a bit. The monthly premiums go up as the cats get older but the cover is a god send right now whilst one of mine is having a whole battery of tests and overnight stays done. I have an old policy - mid range I think before they did lifetime cover but the limits are quite high per ailment so I haven't had any issues with that yet either

My parents used Tesco with their previous cats, but for the latest one they are using pet plan. Their last cat was diagnosed with a heart condition and Tesco would only pay for a limited amount of time whereas their Pet Plan policy covers the lifetime of the animal. The cat also needed its teeth cleaned often and Tesco put limits on that as well. They ended up paying out for a lot of things that Tesco wouldn't cover.

Animal Friends have been excellent all round. Really low premiums for lifetime cover compared to other companies and whenever we have had to claim their customer service has been great and they have paid out really quickly. And, perhaps most surprisingly, our premiums didn't leap up after claiming.

I wouldn't hesitate to recommend them.

I use helpucover.co.uk
Hadn't heard of them until they came up on a price comparison website.
Ran up a vet bill of £1000 in January and they paid out within a week with no quibble. Wouldn't hesitate to recommend.

When we went to pets at home for some advice on our kitten the advisor told us to go with Tesco for insurance. He said they are most likely to pay out without kicking up a fuss.

Does Tesco pay direct to the vet? My vet encourages petplan for that reason and she said they also cover dental care. The rescue also recommended them do I'll stick with them. At £48 a month for two it's not cheap.

Toddlerteaplease · 24/08/2017 03:40

Yes but it depends on the vet. My everyday vet doesn't do direct claims but the hospital and referral centre did.

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 24/08/2017 07:05

Petplan. When Harry broke his jaw the vet warned me the insurance probably wouldn't pay out as he also had dental problems but they paid out without any problems.

My vet was also pleased he's with Petplan because some insurers have stopped paying for kidney medication like Pronefra or Ipakitine as they view it as a supplement and not a medication.

OliviaStabler · 24/08/2017 07:07

Pet Plan life cover. It costs but is well worth it over time.

Waitingforgodot · 24/08/2017 07:12

I have 2 cats. One insured with pet plan and one with tesco. I would recommend pet plan over tesco any day. I've had to call tesco to question their jump in price which made it more expensive despite having made less claims than pet plan.

NiceCuppaTeaAndASitDown · 24/08/2017 07:13

Throwing a curve ball out there, MoreThan is the best we found when we first insured our dog (although this was 4 years ago).
And if I was looking now, I'd look at boughtbymany.com/offers/pet-insurance/

Our dog is an idiot so we have definitely had more from the insurance company than we have paid in, but it is expensive, especially when it goes up year on year

Hookedoncatnip · 24/08/2017 09:48

Thanks for the replies. If only vets bills weren't so eye wateringly high!
Bought By Many looks interesting. Oh God! the poor cat is going to be stuck inside until I get it sorted!
