Smells

Please tell me your routine/products for keeping smells at bay.

I have a bad sense of smell and work from home so don't tend to notice it (unless it's fresh poo), but dh tells me when he comes home from work he can smell cat. It's worse when the weather is warm and still, like today.

I sieve the litter tray at least daily and complete change weekly, sprinkle in litter freshener and spray round febreze. Obviously that's not enough.

Decent cat litter so not Catsan type stuff, that doesn't stop smells. We use Oko cats best at home and that keeps tray smells at bay. No need for litter fresheners.
Is your cat neutered?

NancyDonahue · 23/08/2017 21:37

He is neutered and we use the cats best litter also. Cat is bad at burying so it can sometimes sit on top for a while until I get to it! He's always indoors at night so it could be sitting and festering for a long time.

We use Catsan and rarely notice smells, only if we've left the tray a bit too long (obviously I don't mean we leave poos in the tray!). I've got a very good sense of smell and would notice if the tray smelt. We tried the clumping stuff and it was bloody awful, I needed an angle grinder to get the clumps off the side of the tray.

Your cat's food will make a big difference too. A grain free dry food plus raw meat with make a massive difference to the stinkiness! I've ran out of the normal food so bought purina one at the shop until the zooplus delivery. Stinky poo galore!!!

Vinorosso74 · 23/08/2017 22:06

Hmmmm we don't have any issues unless Vinocat has a flare up of her IBD and god you know she's been!
Wonder if he's scenting around the house, I don't mean spraying and it's quite strong?

NancyDonahue · 23/08/2017 22:13

Mmm.. maybe I need to look into his food. He has one pouch of Waitrose essential meat in jelly per day and unlimited Royal Canin dry. Every 2/3 days he gets a poached chicken breast instead of his pouch. He's rubbish with drinking his water so I mix some in with his pouch and he has a bowl of cat milk with water added. Can you tell me more about the raw meat squirrel?

I don't really know much about it as I'm just following the diet she was given at the breeder's. Apparently there is a group on Facebook called cat crap which is all about raw feeding. Your best bet would be to try there. I have definitely noticed a difference though between her ordinary food and the purina one stuff.

Roll on Saturday when the good stuff arrives!!!

I bought a litter locker and remove poo from the cat litter as soon as i see it. I also use wood pellet litter and that seems to help.

EachandEveryone · 24/08/2017 01:38

I use worlds best I've tried the others and keep coming back to it. Also
Have a litter locker which is a godsend. Have you got all your windows open? I have a Prices diffuser which was expensive but does work.

Veterinari · 24/08/2017 07:54

I think you need to change the litter more often. I use wood litter which is good at neutralising odours but scoop daily and do a full change 2-3x per week
