Fleas- Bob Martin Spot On failed, can we apply Frontline plus 2 weeks after?

Just that really, bit of an infestation on our two year and half old cats following failure of the bob martin - would it be ok to apply the frontline plus?

Don't want to overdose them and we think the outbreak is mostly contained following hoovering/washing/indorexing and flea tablets, but dont want them to be unprotected.

My colleagues cat had poisening from bm stuff, if she hadn't forgotten something & nipped home at lunch time the cat would have died.

Lonecatwithkitten · 27/08/2017 07:45

Quite a lot of Bob Martin's flea products are now fipronil so it is the same active ingredient as frontline. Unfortunately over the counter flea treatments are the older products so are less effective.
My current favourite is Bravecto as it last three months.

Tabymoomoo · 27/08/2017 08:02

Tried Advantage and Frontline neither worked. Only thing that really works is the prescription stuff from vets like Advocate (which makes sense as obviously has a stronger chemical in it as you can only get it on prescription).

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 27/08/2017 08:46

We switched from Advocate to Bravecto after the Advocate wrecked our leather sofa. We're probably going to go back to Advocate though (and cover the sofa!) as his fur was greasy from the Bravecto for a lot longer. We also noticed him scratching more so I'm wondering if it irritated him.

My elderly cat was paralysed at had to be PTS after I used Bob Martin on her :( Please avoid the awful stuff

CockPisssPartridge · 27/08/2017 10:45

Oh god perpetual. That's awful.
I use natural spot on products with neem to keep fleas at bay, working so far. I hate the idea of putting all the chemicals into their blood stream.
I'm the same with kids and nits. Used Hedrin and DD was left with a massive bald patch and still tons of nits. Stick with the Nitty Gritty comb now.

We have seen a lot of deaths in our clinic as a result of using Bob Martin. As lonecat said they have now changed their active ingredient so that it is now merely ineffective rather than ineffective and deadly. There are still some over the counter flea products that contain permethrin, the dangerous substance. All over the counter flea products should be banned avoided.

Lonecatwithkitten · 28/08/2017 08:32

TCN we are seeing new trend with OTC flea products where poor advice being given when they are sold as they don't have any dispensing labels. Most recently frontline administered orally causing oral ulceration leaving the cat unable eat. If there are going to OTC products that should have the same labelling requirements as POM-V. SQP's should have to do more than just sit an exam to be qualified, veterinary nurses have a whole section of their training that is devoted to medicines which requires there clinical coach to evidence that they are competent.
I will get off my soap box now.

I foolishly thought I'd save money and use the Bob Martin spot on!!! Big mistake as one week later and for the first time my dog is covered in fleas :( the vet has said I need to wait 2 weeks until I can re apply with Prinovox. Have covered the floors with indorex and spent the day combing the little buggers out....but more keep appearing! anything else I can do as this will drive me mad waiting until sunday....

PerfectlyCrafted · 10/07/2019 10:21

Silly question possibly but can I just pop in the vets and ask for flea treatments, or do I have to make an appointment and take cat with me?

dementedpixie · 10/07/2019 11:48

Depends on the last time they saw the cat. You will need to know their approximate weight too as the products are based on weight. Think its stronghold plus mine get from the vet

PerfectlyCrafted · 10/07/2019 12:47

Thanks dementedpixie
