Urine infection advice

My wee tabby girl has a urine infection. I noticed blood in her litter tray tonight and then realised she's been straining in the box a few times and cleaning herself in that area a lot more than usual.

I've taken her to the out of hours vet tonight and she's been given an antibiotic injection and an anti inflammatory injection and some antibiotic tablets to give her for 6 days.

I still feel so worried about her. I know I'm being ridiculous but I feel so guilty. She's my first cat and has never been unwell before. I'm just worried she's been in paid for ages and I've not noticed. Does anyone have any tips for treating this or any reassurances or things I should watch for?

Ours has had a couple in the last year (linked to other issues she has). I found an improvement as soon as the initial antibiotics were given. Make sure she has plenty water and wet food can help too.
You got her to the vet as soon as you noticed a problem so am sure she'll be ok. Do you need to take her to your own vet for any follow up at all? Maybe call/email to see what they say.

Thank you for the reply!

Luckily the out of hours vet was her usual vet- just more expensive.

I managed to get the first antibiotic into her this morning with some ham so fingers crossed for the rest.

She's never been unwell before, I feel terrible for her.

Our girl is prone to bladder infections when stressed.
She now has a Cystaid tablet in her dinner everyday and her dry food is the Hills one specifically for cats with this problem.
She's not had one in a year or so so something is working.

Hope your girl is better now.

Don't feel bad, you acted as soon as you noticed something. You're lucky she is a she, it's a lot more dangerous for male cats.

Plenty of water (fountain is good and you can also mix extra into food) and a quiet comfortable place for litter box will help reduce future risk.

When my cat has infection he has an antibiotic injection that lasts for two weeks, easier than the faff of tablets. Ask your vet.

Oh and lots of strokes! Can we have a pic? Flowers

Antibiotic injection AND tablets? I didn't know this was a thing! I pay for the injection to avoid the tablets.

I've heard good things about cystease. Our vet said to mix extra water into food.

One of our cats had them quite a few times as a kitten. We think he withholds when he's stressed, so now we give him cystease if we're going away or anything major is about to change. I do worry that he'll get another and we won't know as he prefers to go outside now rather than in the litter tray, but so far he's seemed fine.
